The Wasp Factory

Just finished reading a book by Iain Banks, "The Wasp Factory". It is a second book I've read of that author (first was "Walking on Glass"), and just like the first one I tried, it is just great. Quite a simple story yet told with plenty of humor and horror at the same time -- the whole book made me want to read more of the same authors, so I'll be starting on The Bridge tomorrow). Being read mostly sci-fi for past few years, I started moving towards different writing styles at the end of 2002, and I don't regret it. Variety of reading is essential to keep yourself sane. Or unsane.

And whenever you're tempted to go back to scifi, you can start reading Iain M. Banks (with the "M." being key) which is the same quality of stuff, applied to a slightly different genre (if you do go that route, I'd recommend re-reading The Bridge afterwards, since it's got a few "easter eggs" the cross the fiction/scifi separation that Iain usually has).

WOW!! Iain banks is one of my favourite writers. I read his first two boks in the exact same order.

I must really recommend The Player of Games - easily one of his best, and I've read 'm all (that is - I'm reading his latest /Dead Air/ right now!!)

Anyways, I'm off to play some one-dimensional chess

I got SO lost reading 'The Bridge', but I agree - all of Iain Banks' (and Iain M. Banks') books are brilliant. I'm a huge fan, although sometimes I find the odd section a little tasteless (read: bestiality/quadruple amputee fetish, in the middle of The Bridge)
I'm currently trying to write a coursework essay comparing/contrasting Alex from 'A Clockwork Orange', with Frank from 'The Wasp Factory'...it's proving a little harder than I expected, but still fun.
