TiVo Home Media Option

I just signed up for TiVo's Home Media Option and I must say, I've very disappointed. They have demos of it online.

First, let's talk about...

I have to say that i am very jealous for one thing, the management. Personally i use Xbox Media Player for my media in the living room, its much better than what tivo has to offer, (I have a tivo too). But i love the way Tivo chose to share the files, they could have just made you keep an application open and drop folders in it to share. But they didnt, they just use iTunes. This is great because you don't have to manage 2 things. Once again your digital hub is working. You are forgetting just this. One application and its shared everywhere, this is such a bonus.

But like i said, the player doesn't look that great. I'll stick with my xbox media player

If it wasn't that easy, they would have never made a mac version of their software. The actual sharing application is a java applet.

Don't they have Boys named George now?

And I'm not wearing a hat right now.

Like totally, that video cracked me up. Totally!

Weird. I came here to suggest that Unsanity make a Haxie that will get TiVo to play your Mac's audio line out to TiVo, and then I ran into this article. Such a Haxie would save me from running an audio cable to my stereo when I play a game, watch a QuickTime movie, etc.

As for Home Media Option, it worked flawlessly for me as soon as I figured out which port to open on my firewall. It's ironic that Mac to TiVo can share iTunes and iPhotos with Rendezvous but Mac to Mac can't (officially supported).

I wish that HMO could share photos outside of iPhoto Libaries since I don't use iPhoto. It would also be nice if the Music could continue to play outside of the Music section (e.g. while displaying Live TV).

The Groups sorting option and TiVo Central Online features are great. Can't wait to get another TiVo Series 2 to stream among rooms. I can see how the $99 plus the cost of a USB network adapter might be pricey for some. Apple should sell TiVo Series 2 systems in the AppleStore.

(In regards to the comment that it's cumbersome to browse songs, I suggest that you create some playlists optimized for TiVo.)

All in all, HMO is pretty awesome for an initial release and staying within fair use law. Kudos to TiVo for working with Mac!

You forgot to close a tag, all posts are in italics.

I guess you can delete that comment, now. ;)

Nah, I don't believe in deleting people's posts or what they've said elsewhere pointing out a mistake I made even after I have fixed it.

Oh, and I didn't see it because I was using Safari and Cocoa doesn't support synthetic styles (like making a bold when there is no bold support in the font). Most Cocoa browsers or programs that do show bold/italic just do a matrix transform which means the bold and the italic could be different in every single program. (QuickDraw supports synthetic fonts for any variation, including shadow and outline).

Bah. Forget TiVo; El Gato's EyeTV is where it's at, if you're a Mac user.

Posted by: Scottish on April 8, 2003 8:21 PM

But EyeTV isn't where it's at if you have Digital Cable. There is no way to make it change the channel. TiVo has this function.

Oh, so you can hook up TiVo to a computer now? Neat.

How's the resolution on the TiVo signal? I read on the requisite websites that EskapeLabs' MyTV and El Gato's EyeTV will only display a paltry 320x240 image.

Here's a PSA since this blog must be ranking high on some search engine(s) for people wondering why they can't get HMO to work with their Mac, judging by the email I'm receiving...

Additional troubleshooting step for Macintosh only:
7. Check the Mac firewall. If your Macintosh is using the firewall--a kind of security software for computers connected to a network--that is provided as a feature of the Mac OS, try the following steps. If you are using other firewall or security software, please consult the
documentation that came with the software.
a. Open System Preferences and click "Sharing."
b. Click on the ?Firewall? tab.
c. Click the ?New...? button. A Sharing dialog box appears.
d. Select ?Other? from the port name popup menu.
e. In the ?Port Number, Range, or Series? field, enter ?8101?. TiVo Desktop tries port 8101 first, then tries 8102, then 8200. If you have already used 8101 for another application, you can enter one of the other two port numbers instead.
f. In the Description field, type ?TiVo Desktop.?
g. Click "OK.?

BTW, those out-of-place question marks are the result of me not noticing that the TiVo Spring 2003 Service Update PDF had some curly quotes mixed in with the regular quotes.

Well, while the Tivo thing looks pretty slick. I've been just enthralled with my ReplayTV (Had it for just over 2 weeks now).

Now that the service has been bought by a reputable company and it will continue, there's NO WAY that I would get a Tivo over it for now.

I mean, iTunes integration is nice, but I'm a LOT more impressed by the fact that the ReplayTV had an ethernet port in the first place. Add to that, since I can use my Mac to play video over my network connection from the ReplayTV and I can stash it on the Mac to replay on my TV, the Tivo HMO looks more like an afterthought.

Tivo definately has some nice points (two of the other guys at our company have Tivii(?) and we've been comparing notes), the Replay is a LOT closer to what I was thinking of when I got one of these things, and it was about the price of an EyeTV.

Just installed tivo HMO and it was working great with itunes and iphoto, but the photo portion has now crashed on tivo. Tivo is "seeing" my mac network for iphoto, but all the jpeg images are now missing and tivo is showing only an error icon (looks like a tree with a rip through the middle). Anyone else have this problem or a solution?
