Nice Ad Tailoring

Saw this on a Russian site and thought it is pretty funny. Picture below is a poster ad in the Moscow metro, advertising Microsoft and it's new "Now I Know" campaign they are running there.

The printed text on the banner says: "Before I wasn't thinking about this. Now I know." Somebody added another line with a ballpen, and it makes the whole ad look quite different. Oh the Microsoft, WinXP network activation, and the joys of being a legal user. ;)

Perhaps an English translation for us that can't read Russian?

Didn't I provide one in bold right above the ad? The fine print says something about being sure that your computer comes with a licensed Windows XP pre-installed. =)

Maybe I missed it, but I don't think you gave a translation of the text in pen? (I'm really tired right now and it's Friday, so I might have missed it :P)

Oh, the text in pen is Windows activation number (or serial number, whatever). =)

LOL...poor Microsoft. Are they writing different serial numbers on different ads so you can run multiple machines?

You can only activate from a particular key about 5 times before it is disabled. If a user wishes to reinstall more than that number of times, they must be more careful when reloading their OS; there are 2 files in the System32 directory that contain their activation information. If they do not restore these after a clean install, and activate again, they lose one of their 5 times. When disabled, they must contact Microsoft and explain themselves to get their key reactivated.

I actually laughed that someone in this comment page thought that the activation key was Russian text.

kwyjibo: i must admit i have never activated win xp in my life, but I thought there's a 'phone activation' option where you supposedly call Microsoft, tell them some number, and they tell you the response text to enter into the fields? Of course this may be nothing to do with the serial -- as I said, I have never used PCs *that* much =)
