Follow-ups

Reading blogs through NetNewsWire slowly becomes my new 'Net addiction. Scary.

Anyway, Here are some interesting follow-ups to the topics I've been ranting and pointing to before:

~stevenf talks about philosophical concepts of blogging (here) , touching the very common and usual thought for many people who have their own blogs - "Is it better to remain silent and be thought of as a fool, or to speak and remove all doubt?".

Daring Fireball speaks about the VersionTracker reviews (in response to ~stevenf rant). John suggests removing VersionTracker user reviews feature altogether as there's "no credibility whatsoever in VersionTracker’s anonymous review forums"; he also notes that very little VT reviews are accurate and objective. I wouldn't go as far as removing the reviews of VT altogether; in my opinion, though, MacUpdate has a better approach to reviews - they only show the average rating on the right, without listing the reviews below the product description. This makes the reviews more objective, as to post a review you have to go to the reviews page, which makes the whole process much more intentional than simply entering a few words in a text box and clicking 'submit' on the same page. Also, having comments flowing on the product info page invites users to do some form of 'conversation' (and mind you, at least half of user reviews on VersionTracker are 'replies' to other user reviews). Of course - you see a whole thread of user opinions, and you have an easy way to reply, so why not? And mind you, some of reviews are actually helpful; some even point at the bugs developer didn't found in the beta-testing process (and for some people its easier to enter a bash review in VT than composing an email to the developer. It hurts us, but sometimes its still a source of information). After all, the freedom of commenting is what makes the whole thing so nice. So my suggestion would be to adopt MacUpdate style of product reviews.

On the commenting topic, them.ws briefly mentions he dislikes sites without an ability to comment. I agree, often commenting is a way to go, as long as it doesn't turns into a blatant, non-objective flame war (as many of VT reviews are turned into).

That's enough follow-ups for now; time to do some real work. =)

I feel the same way as Slava...and found some interesting data in Ziff Davis's performance tests.

I wrote to them as follows:

Regarding the specs for the Gateway Profile...incorrect data.

I was going over your specs regarding Gateways's Profile...and their advertising blitz is based on the specs that etestinglabs.com has compiled...like video resolution and game frame rates...etc...

Etestinglabs (Ziff company) says it's faster then a new imac...better graphics...and "more features".

But..the Profile doesn't have a DVD burner, and the base model doesn't even have a CD-ROM burner for data, while the base iMac has a DVD burner for vidoes.

I went to Gateway.com and checked out the specs...finding a PDF doc outlining all the wonderful benefits and speed gains that the iMac lacks. While perusing this document, I did find some incorrect info...see attached. The 17" iMac has a larger default pixel count than stated in their spec doc (published for the public at large to compare the two computers)

http://www.gateway.com/products/desktops/prf4/sweepstakes/allmedia.shtml

This may not seem like a big deal, but if Gateway is basing their campaign on the nuances between the iMac and their new Profile...this is a huge deal. They are saying that the default resolution of the new 17" iMac is 1024x768 while the Profile is 1280x1024 - when in reality, the new iMac is 1440 X 900, which in some ways...is BETTER resolution then the Profile, because it's horizontal resolution is larger - which in turn, means more document real estate. This is touching on the fringe of false data...and in turn, false accusations about Profile being "better" because of screen resolution...when in reality, there is no data to back up that claim.

They're response:

Thanks for writing. If you're writing in reference to the Gateway: Profile PC versus Apple iMac Performance Comparison Test, please note that Gateway commissioned us to test only the performance of these systems. Thus, this test report covers only performance and does not attempt to measure other factors that determine which system is best for a particular user's needs.

Regarding the information you've highlighted in the test report: please note that this is from the "Test System Disclosures" section. This section discloses the software settings and hardware configuration used in the systems under test. The specific field you mention is clearly labeled "Video Resolution Assigned."

You can read the complete test report at:

http://www.etestinglabs.com/main/reports/gateway.asp

Please let us know if you have any other questions about eTesting Labs.

- - - So...you see, even though the screen resolution on the 17" iMac isn't even designed to be set to 1024X768 (looks bad), Ziff Davis tested the system with the resolution set to 1024X768. This would actually increase the frame-rate performance of the iMac using the G-force 4 card...but it just shows you that when people read the specs and see that the 17" iMac is only 1024X768 (as in the spec)...they don't realize that it was only tested with that resolution...and doesn't come stock with that resolution. I may be beating a dead horse...but the small print can be a powerful tool for those doing their homework.
