Gimme Free Stuff!

A few recent threads on MacNN set me off a bit.

A couple of our fellow Macintosh friends feel that us developers just aren't giving away enough free software. We are actually charging for our work. (can you believe our nerve!?!)

My rant appears here: The Mac Development community

The original thread that started it: Windowshade or rollup feature?"

Am I nuts? I just can't understand how a person can be mad, upset, offended, or even slightly miffed that a developer would charge for their product(s).

Sound off, go crazy, and who knows...maybe I'll change my thinking. ...As soon as I can go down to the store and pick up a new set of tires for my car because last years model had a better set. ;)

Digg This!

Well said. But here you are preaching to the choir. :) I have happily paid for three of your haxies. Well four if you count the second FruitMenu I bought for someone as thanks for writing a utility for me for free.

Keep up the great work and know that lots of us appreciate and support you guys.

True, excuse me for preaching to the choir.

I didn't want to sound ungrateful to our users. We're well aware that our users are incredibly supportive.

If that was a rant, I'm Markie Post. And I'm not Markie Post. You were quite calm. (Amusingly, I first typed 'clam' there.)

I'm always amazed at people who go out of their way seeking shareware to achieve a specific task, and then once they find it refuse to pay for it.

If performing the task is important enough to a user to seek out a solution, then I'd think the solution would be of some value.

But what do I know? Stupid me, I pay for my CDs, too.

You need to stop reading MacNN. I stopped reading it well over two years ago.

You see the same crap in the VT comments... I don't get it either.

People will always complain...that's life. People will also recognize that which is good--eventually. When value is realized, people will return, stop complaining and be glad to pay for that which is good and realized.

Keep up the good work at Unsanity.

If you like the program and find it useful... buy it.
Cheap b@stards... enough said.
Programmers gotta eat too.

Don't stop reading MacNN...stop reading macNN's comments. they are usually quite immature.

I agree with you here. I'm atonished at the people's attitude.

You work had to develop the software. You have a right to ask for payment. If people think it's too expensive, then they are free to refrain from buying it. But it's your right to ask a price. There is no law that says stuff should be free.

The idiots!
