Support [Indieware,Shareware]

Yesterday I've finally put some money on my MasterCard (it's a debit card and not credit, as there's no credit cards in Russia whatsoever), and decided to purchase several software titles I use/like:

  • Synergy - awesome lil app that controls iTunes, downloads album art, and does all the handy things so I don't have to switch to iTunes to skip a song or change rating. Awesome!
  • Speed Download 2 - this is an app that offers multiple stream downloading of files; I use it not because of that but because of bandwidth capping feature (so if I am downloading something, it is not taking all of my 256 kbit radio link) and because of queueing.
  • Proteus - I use Proteus for ICQ, and I actually managed to survive the nags for almost a year. But the amount of work Justin puts in it is impressive, so it deserves a registration.
  • Ok, do not slap me, the last title I got is NetNewsWire. ;) It expired on me looong time ago, and I have fallen as low as reading my favorite blogs via Safari. But no more, and apologies to Brent for keeping this off my purchase list for longer than it should be.

Overall, these guys do awesome work, and knowing how hard it is to exist on [indie, share]ware sales, I should do more support to authors of products I use on daily basis.

Blech. Proteus.

Proteus is great!

It was actually the first shareware I ever bought.. sadly, way too people are registering it because the lack of really annoying nag messages, hehe..

As for Synergy, while the album cover downloads is very nice, I found it a bit slow on my system (G4 700), so I use PTHiTunesNotifier (and that one's free, too :)

And I should buy NetNewsWire too.. I still use the lite version and is content with that, I guess, but some extra features is always nice.. but $40 is a bit steep for me currently..

Very cool to give props to other shareware makers, Slava. Eivind: I love PTHiTunesNotifier--PTHClock is terrific, too, if you haven't tried it. I paid for NNW during one of the periods when it was $30; I don't really use the Pro features very much but I had become so dependent on the program I felt guilty about using the freeware version!

I did the same thing just a few weeks ago. The only problem with Proteus is the misimplementation of a few features on different IM services (and the fact that MSN and Yahoo are "upgrading" their services soon, which may cause a blockout)

Slava: No credit cards in Russia? This will sound naive.. but WHY?

Chris: well, I admit I don't know for all banks, but the majority will not offer the credit card option. Most common option here is Cirrus/Maestro or Visa Electron linked to your bank account.

You can also get MasterCard Mass or Visa Classic which are, too, linked to another account, and limited to the balance on that account, effectively making them debit cards (even though they do look like credit cards outside ;).

You can get a true credit card if you open an account in some other country (Lithuania is actively working to get Russian clients, for example Parex Banka), but that would cost you about $3k-$10k on the account as a safe deposit to guarantee your credit, which doesn't makes it much different from a debit card option above. Suck. =)

I guess this is because economy is poor here, and nobody is willing to take the risk about client spending money and disappearing.

I'd like to have viewing options different for different users and chat rooms. Hard to explain. I'd like Chats with multiple people have different display options than chats with single people.

For instance. I'd like Chats to display with names and icons while chats with one person to just have icons. There's no reason to have the persons name displayed under their icon when they're the only one you're talking to. I mean, hello!?

And in Text mode (Non-bubble) the Users name shouldn't be the same color as the other text. It gets merged with their reply.

Come on, Apple. You're dropping the ball here.

And Tabs would be neat if you could group certain users together or drag one chat around and dock it with each other. (Ala Photoshop's Palettes) I mean, there are times I'd want to have one window, and times I'd want two next to each other. So being able to dock them would be nice. But I'm sure even just a single Chat window mode would be fine.

Seeing how long it took to convince Apple we wanted Tabs in Safari, how long would it take to get them in iChat?
