Skin a Dock

The Application Enhancer is slowly getting adopted by third-party developers, and we welcome a new addition to the APE-using tools a new cool tool from Infinity-to-the-Power-of-Infinity - Skin a Dock.

Skin-a-Dock.png

That little tool will do what it says - it will skin your Dock, so your icons are lying underwater or are scattered around the grass. Nifty visual eye candy and a way to impress your friends as well!

Even though this is just a beta, I suggest giving it a try and give feedback to its author. ;)

Skin a Dock

UPDATE 11/05: for the unfortunate souls having problems, here's a tip how to fully uninstall Skin a Dock beta:

  • Remove ~/Library/PreferencePanes/Skin a Dock.prefPane
  • Remove ~/Library/Application Enhancers/Skin a Dock.ape
  • Remove /Library/Caches/com.apple.dock.iconcache.<your user name>
  • Log out

Skin a Dock, like any other APE module, does not changes anything on disk, so once you remove all its components, everything should be back to normal (com.apple.dock.iconcache.joeuser file isn't a part of Skin a Dock, but it contains cached Dock icons). A star minus to David of ITTPOI for not providing clean uninstall instructions. ;)

Skin a dock is cool, but unfortunately it made my NetNewsWire Lite (any version) flip out!!! I had to remove the Skin a Dock .ape file. DOH!

Very buggy!!!!!!!

Ouch. This is worrying... it's not especially good PR for Application Enhancer when the first ever third-party APE module causes all the problems Skin A Dock does... shades of extension conflicts.
I'd have expected better out of ITTPOI, honestly... how could he not have noticed that most apps display "Application Not Responding" in the Dock...? I think it's still a good thing that Unsanity released the SDK for APE, but Skin A Dock is taking the beating of its life on Versiontracker (among other places), and uninformed people are starting to crusade against APE. :/ Stupid and unfortunate, but preventable.

Yeah, it does have issues, but since its a first beta, I beleive David will fix all the issues very soon -- and the amount of work he has done is amazing. Then again, the amount of work needed to bring SAD in shape is quite big, too. =)

And no, it's not a first third-party APE. First third-party APE was iChat Enhancer. ;)

Chalk me up in the crowd of the people who received a dead Keychain when they installed Skin A Dock. Uninstalled and everything was happy once more.

iChat Enhancer works great though :).

You made MacSlash...

Well I installed it and can't get rid of it. I did everything said above to uninstall. Signed out and restarted. I also removed the few skins I had loaded on the computer. Those blue tabs I tried just won't go away. The bad thing is they make my icons so small I don't know what is what. This program is just way too buggy.

I have the same problems as Mary Lee. Anything related to Skin a Dock is securely deleted, yet the Dock icons still remain. I'm seriously considering backing-up all my personal data and deleting my user...

Guys - don't stress... I had the same problem with icons remaining after Skin-A-Dock had been well and truely removed... It's a hassel but all you have to do is remove everything from your dock, and then restack it with the apps you want... All the wierd Skin-A-Dock shit will then vanish

:)

Hopefully, there will be bug fixes in the next version. My dock is transparent at least for now. I guess that is better than nothing.

Anyone know if plans are in the making for maybe a re release? It's been busted since jaguar... maybe a leopard reveal? That'd be nice.
