Random Panther Notes #1

While working on Labels X update for Panther today, I discovered an interesting thing: Apple engineers has added the calls to read and write label names and colors (GetLabel/SetLabel was there before, but SetLabel was a single blr, plus they worked with Str255 so localized label names were a hassle -- new calls work with CFStrings). What is most fun, though, is that the calls return proper new names (Red, Orange, Yellow etc), but old colors (Essential, In Progress etc). In fact, Finder.app completely ignores the colors returned and seems to use its very own, hardcoded values. WTF? The quest continues tomorrow...

Another random note is Image Capture.app -- I have noticed there is that spiffy rotating cube effect in the importing pictures sheet when it imports multiple pictures from the digital camera. Neat.

Digg This!

I haven't used Labels X, so pardon my ignorance, but I am curious what the program offers that Panther doesn't.

I don't think much (YET!) other than it looks
better. I'm sure Unsanity will outdo it with
features.

Does this have anything to do with the user-defined label names in the Finder preferences?

Hey guys, I was just wondering who I had to talk to about becoming a beta tester for Unsanity? I saw that they are looking for people to help them test on Panther, and I would be very happy to lend a hand. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Hay I'm also interested in beta testing. I've got Panther 7B85 and a 1.25GHz G4 with 1.25GB ram. I sent an email to you too, so I hope you get that.

I am very interested in becomming a beta tester for unsanity, I am also currently running panther on an iMac G4 800mhz with 256mb ram, and a 60GB HD.

geniuses, maybe unsanity doesn't want beta testers who are running pirated software (since anything higher than 7b74 wasn't seeded publicly) you might actually have to know something about using the computer, crash logs, and how to assist... not simply load carracho, steal panther, and post pleadings in a 'blog.

Posted by: on October 9, 2003 11:27 AM

Well, "genius", you are wrong because Build 7B85 of 10.3 was seeded and released internally well over a week ago. Also, 10.3 Server was released at 7B86. Carracho? Please, don't make me laugh.

And please, don't think so highly of yourself as to believe you are the only one who knows where the CrashReporter folder is, "genius".

Also, I posted this information because Unsanity said they were looking for beta testers:
"If you'd like to be included in the beta list, email me your computer configuration from the Apple System Profiler (and I'll leave figuring out my email to you ;).
Posted by slava at 11:51 AM on October 1st, 2003"

Please think before you speak.

Unless you work at Apple you are in illegal possession of their product(s) and the method in obtaining it is tainted as well. As for the configuration, et. all posting, he said to "email" him... not fill the comments section with your hardware specs. An excellent rebuttal, kudos to you.

"you are wrong because Build 7B85 of 10.3 was seeded and released internally"

Um, do you work for Apple, Drew? Hm, a spymac email address - guess not.

Wow, I didn't realize you had to expose your life here to try to get in touch with Slava.

I don't need to tell you anything about my personal life, my computer, or anything that is on it. Slava asked for beta testers, and I happily obliged. If I wanted a full scale interogation, I would go to the airport.

As for your attitude, you can sit on it buddy. My "spymac" email is for morons like you. You actually think I would give out my primary email to crumbs like you?

Posted by: Drew Kerrigan on October 9, 2003 11:17 PM

Drew --

No offense or anything, but if you even go to the spymac.com website, that's just kind of lame.

We all need @slashdot.org emails :D

Posted by: on October 10, 2003 3:42 AM

simX, no offense taken: as I don't even see why spymac.com would be considered lame.

Hmmm, its a free email account that can be used from inside Mac OS X, and also has tons of free storage. Yeah, I am stupid for giving up my hotmail account for that....

Posted by: Drew Kerrigan on October 10, 2003 10:49 AM

Drew --

I suppose... but there are probably plenty of other free e-mail accounts that provide similar features and aren't hosted by a lame rumor site who actually fabricates its rumors.

But I suppose that's just my opinion.

Here's a good webmail service:

http://www.thecrazyones.com/

Only problem is that I don't actually use it, so I wouldn't know if you can use it from Mail or Entourage, or just as webmail.

Yeah, this Labels thing is insane. I even posted a bug report about it something like 3 weeks ago, begging them not to release with Labels in the state they're in, but no...

In any case, looks like we'll definitely still be relying on Labels X for some time to come! It totally bums me out that Apple has not posted the "GM" version of Panther for all devs by now (ie, us cheapskate $500 devs :-). Given that there's lots of people running 7B85, I feel quite left out, but not left out enough to actually install a warez copy on my Mac. (Good lord, people--it's Unix! There could be practically *anything* running around in there and most people wouldn't have a clue! What size is a keystroke recorder--10-15k vs. a 1.8gb install?)
