I have been well known in certain circles (pretty tight circles, though) as somebody who just loves to bash Mac OS X and its underlying technologies. I have been ranting about Cocoa and Carbon, Mach-O ABI, not to mention numerous stances towards other things that irritated me in OSX in other blog posts.
But I think this is a good ocassion to say to myself and others "on the scene": Enough Bitching. Mac OS X is not perfect. Far from it. But I guess we can see that it is evolving, progressing and many things that irritated us are getting worked out (and some don't ;). For myself, I will from now on remember that there are more positive aspects in Mac OS X than negative ones, mostly because of the users' efforts and feedback both to Apple and to the smaller companies who plumb the holes with little utilities (we are one of these).
I think I know where we are going, and I like the path. There will be some bumps along the way, but there is a sunshine in the end (then again, this all sounds much like religious mumbo-jumbo about the ethernal life -- and there's nobody who can confirm or deny whether it's true or not). As a user, I can say I will continue supporting my favorite fruit company; as a developer, I can say we will continue doing what we do, as this is to everybody's benefit.
Mac OS X is great. Almost. Enough bitching. Relax yourself and enjoy the ride. Bugs are there to fix, incomplete functionality there is to get rid of or polish it, and plain crashing is there just for fun. Yeah.

If you don't appreciate X, try rebooting into 9 and working in it for a full day, as I occasionally have to when fixing old bugs. Wow. What a difference. Sure, I'd like a few things back in X from 9, but would I trade, say, true multi-tasking for them? Heh... no.
Posted by: Rob W on August 28, 2003 5:34 AMGreat post, Slava. Considering the alternatives for desktop OSs out there, many of which I know very well, OS X is the only one I truly enjoy using. So giving that, OS X's shortcoming are extremely trivial.
Posted by: Ken on August 28, 2003 9:42 AMI can't use OS 9 anymore, the only thing that I can't live without that OS X doesn't have is the classic style Apple menu, so I own FruitMenu.
Posted by: NetworkShadow on August 29, 2003 9:45 AMThis is just my 2 yen, but I think that Apple requires 'measured bashing' in areas that they are consistently weak on. Face it. The entire 'Mac experience' that Cupertino would like to sell you on is a tool. And if pros, who have to use these tools day in and day out find snags, they have every right to gripe. My personal gripes go to Awqua, and the general quality of the TiBooks (or lack thereof) as field units.
That being said, for every one thing Apple can't ever get right (like screen spots from the keyboard due to faulty design on the Wallstreet, Lombard, Pismo, and every TiBook to date, despite numerous complaints), there seem to be 5 -10 things that they address every quarter.
Apple's a company like any other. Don't let them get complacent like 'those other guys', and don't cut them any slack when they get it wrong. If you paid top dollar for your equipment, you should expect no less -- unless you want Apple to go the way of SGI.
Posted by: Leo of BORG on August 31, 2003 6:52 AMYeah Apple does need to wake up and smell the coffee sometimes but overall whatever problem you get into you can usually fix it and get working again.
There are so many times people have asked me what kind of machine to get. I tell them my biased opinion with one statement. It is simple to get up and running and when you add devices you shouldn't have problems. But they say "It cost $$$ more!" Yes I respond but you won't get $$$ headaches later. After a brief interlude their mind is made up. No Apple. Then the phone calls start. What do I do when this or that or something else happens. Heck I don't know Windows. I gave up on PCs at the DOS level. Then another brief interlude. "Boy I wish I would have listened to you and bought a Mac."
So bash Apple, they need to hear it (Screens and keyboards) but for novices, well just wait for those phone calls.....
