WindowShade X 4.0: Public Beta
WindowShade X 4.0 is the next free major upgrade to one of our most popular haxies, and it is almost ready for public release. The major thing we have added this release is support for arbitrary hot keys to invoke certain window behaviors... So if you'd want Command+F1 to make window transparent and, say, Command+Option+U to minimize in place, you can have it now. What we miss is a bit of feedback from you, our users. Do you think the GUI is good and easy to use? Do you see any abnormal behavior? Is everything working smoothly? This is why we post this beta online for you to try. Usual disclaimer applies, this is a beta software, it may contain bugs, so if anything goes wrong, you can uninstall it (and let us know what happened). Please do not post links to it to software tracking pages such as VersionTracker and MacUpdate (and if you're a staff member of such a site, please don't link to this beta). Please post all bugs to Full version notes:

It seems to be quicker, but then again I thought my teeth were whiter when I looked in the mirror this morning. Posted by: CREB on July 5, 2005 9:50 AMMake sure to log out before messing with the Windowshade beta. I didn't and it crashed the Finder and all apps. So pay attention to the instructions... Otherwise, no problems so far on 10.4.2 8C44 (legit). Posted by: Ishan Bhattacharya on July 5, 2005 11:40 AMThis version is working quite well. The interface is straight forward and easy to use. The MIP and Advance settings are easy to understand and use. Thanks for a useful haxie. Posted by: Glenn Lucas on July 5, 2005 11:46 AMIshan, I have made it a habit to RESTART with any of the beta and final haxies. Minimize-In-Place seems a bit smoother. Posted by: CREB on July 5, 2005 3:49 PMIshan: Thank you. This was fixed, thanks to your report. =) Posted by: slava on July 6, 2005 7:58 AMI am interested in getting the program when the following option is available: The frontmost window is opaque, and the other windows can be set at a certain transparency. When a background window is clicked, it becomes opaque and all the other windows go transparent. Is that an option in the near future (or included in this beta??) Posted by: Brian Zollinhofer on July 7, 2005 12:47 PMI've made this suggestion before... As window shade in OS9 used to work... an omitted feature i really miss is .. Having a desktop full of several minimised windows.. double clicking the parent folder should not only bring forward the associated minimised window, but should open it to full size as well.... bringing a bar to the front of several bars is still hard to see.. and since you're double clicking it anyway.. obviously you want to open it.. so why go through finding it and then adding the step of opening it as well... Just a thought guys... ortherwise a great product.. Thanks ... Posted by: Thomas on July 7, 2005 2:02 PMThomas, it made sense to me... Double clicking a folder should always open a full window. Currently (if I understand Thomas correctly), if the folder already had a window opened, and that window was minimized, if you double click the original folder, the minimized window (now only a bar) pops to the front, but the window stays minimized. Thomas was saying that when you double click the original folder (or "parent" folder), it should bring the minimized window to the front and "un-minimize" it. I concur. Do you? :-) Did I understand you correctly, Thomas? Posted by: Brian Zollinhofer on July 15, 2005 11:28 PMThomas, it made sense to me... Double clicking a folder should always open a full window. Posted by: Brian Zollinhofer on July 15, 2005 11:29 PMHi Guys, Great job...I noticed Widowshade 3.5.2 does not work on Illustrator CS (11.0.0)...does the update fix that problem??? Or is it just me...again ;) Posted by: Lee on September 22, 2005 8:14 AMThe ''Float on Top'' feature doesn't work for some programs, including Adobe Products in the Creative Suite 2. Could you please fix this? Posted by: Erik on November 8, 2005 8:28 PMAs a registered user of Windowshade I welcome the new version, Leopard compatible. I didn't had problems to install Leopard as my version of Application Enhancer has always been up to date. The only setting that seems to stick is "Bottom Edge" starting at left, but then with barely visible minimized windows (only top of windows are visible). Also: if there are minimized windows, stopping Windowshade makes them completely disappear. No means to get them back . Only solution is to quit the application and launch it again. This is on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz 2 GB RAM 160 GB Hitachi, Leopard 10.5.2 no other haxies than Windowshade. Posted by: Edouard Kestemont on February 29, 2008 12:28 AM"Note: unfortunately we do not provide phone support for our products - contact us via email for sales and support questions." Right. The real question I'm guessing now is exactly where do I "email for sales and support" ANSWERS?
Having been a Mac tech myself for over 15 years, including a period with an Apple reseller/service provider, I certainly can understand how busy the business can be and/or things get overlooked or misplaced. But if the following message had been received a week ago, I'm still waiting for a reply. And if not, your company may need to determine what happened on your end. In any event, given my experience noted above and other attempts to solve the problem myself in addition to those below, I'm now finding WindowShade working one or two times out of about a hundred "Minimize window" clicks in Safari while working perfectly well in every other app and the Finder. And as soon as I'm startled to discover WindowShade _might_ be functioning again, I've immediately clicked that Minimize yellow button only to see the window flying off to the dock. So PLEASE advise without further delay. Thanks. RR
From: RR As a longtime Unsanity customer as well as an experienced Macintosh technician who once worked for an Apple reseller/service provider, I have just encountered a problem with WindowShade X suddenly failing to work, as far as I can tell, only with Safari. After attempting to uninstall the utility and also APE, and then updating to version 4.1.2 without success, I proceeded to re-install Safari 3.1.1 on OS X 10.4.11 (after also removing the Safari plist prefs file). Needless to say, I am not inclined to perform an entire OS Archive & Install merely to have the benefit of WindowShade in just one app, although I'm sure I rely on it with as many Safari windows, even with tabs, as I tend to have open through any one session. So I would appreciate any recommendation or solution to resolve the problem with a minimum of effort and/or disruption. Thanks. RR Keep comments on topic.
