Voting!
We are almost ready for a FruitMenu update. The only thing missing is a new, refined icon. We had an excellent designer, Jasper Hauser, prepare us a few icons but we cannot decide which one we like best. So it would be extra sweet if you would vote on the icon variant you like most. Just put a letter "A" to "E" in the comments to this entry (and optionally explain why, but the latter isn't needed). Once we have a winning icon, we'll use it, wrap up FruitMenu 3.3 and release it. ;) Tell your friends, too -- the more votes we get, the better representation of opinions we'll have. And thanks! ![]() Variant A ![]() Variant B ![]() Variant C ![]() Variant D ![]() Variant E

A. "Customizing the *Apple* Menu" is what this software is about, right? Posted by: JackSim on March 8, 2005 2:38 AMA. I agree with the post above mine. But I also think that for "readability" that multiple fruits will be much too hard of a read at smaller sizes. But on a personal note, perhaps the perspective of the "box" is unnecessary. Posted by: Jason on March 8, 2005 2:44 AMBanana! Banana Jr. 6000!!!!111!oneone See http://toastytech.com/guis/banana2.html for the reason why. Posted by: Rosyna on March 8, 2005 2:45 AMI'd have to say A is my favorite out of the bunch up there, but they all lack color / interest. (And way to go Jasper! Making icons for Unsanity :-) ) -- SirG3 Posted by: SirG3 on March 8, 2005 4:45 AMA. Definitely needs to look reminiscent of the Apple menu itself. Posted by: Phil Dokas on March 8, 2005 6:11 AMA The inner icon on the other icons fills too little of the space. Posted by: on March 8, 2005 6:18 AMI like C. It's fruit, but nothing that looks like a take-off of Apple's logo. Posted by: Ken on March 8, 2005 6:54 AMA for sure. I think it's important to relate in some way the fact that FruitMenu is a utility to customize your Apple menu. Posted by: Derik on March 8, 2005 7:22 AM1. E While Jasper has made some great icons, I would vote "E" my first choice, followed by "A" if you absolutely had to go with any of them. As succinctly said by "JackSim", you're modifying the *Apple* menu. While all of the icons are of quality work, a cherry or a pear completely dodges the raison d'être of the icon. It's supposed to as-accurately-as-possible represent what the app/function/whatever-is-being-iconized does. Of course, my personal disinterest in all of the icons would be attributed to that last argument. I could see how "A" would be an acceptable choice if Unsanity standardized on having all of its icons represented in the plastic blue tile theme, but that would be the only situation in which I would agree "A" would make sense versus a completely different (and more accurate) icon design. Posted by: Brian Mikol on March 8, 2005 2:48 PME - because a banana would represent Unsanity more so, B C : It's a cherry! Way too many apples and pears [pearpc]. I think a cherry would look mad sexy. Posted by: markms on March 8, 2005 5:32 PME — I'm not ecstatic about it. But ... E. Kudos to Mr. Hauser for making the blue tile look cool and have a nice perspective that makes it fit into Aqua's 3D world -- too many icons just lack dimension, leaving you with "pictures" in your dock instead of "objects". But I don't think it's the right choice for the product... regardless of the specific fruit pictured, it looks like this has more to do with fruits than with menus. Since I shouldn't complain without offering an alternative... :) I'd go for a concept not unlike that of Apple's Grab.app icon: a modification of the standard "media & tool" app icon pattern (modified in perspective to account for this being a utility whose icon is seen most often in System Prefs), in which the "media" clearly depicts a menu. The "tool" could be scissors, duct tape, or similar, hinting at how you can snip it up into pieces and rearrange/reassemble them. Posted by: Rick Roe on March 8, 2005 8:59 PME, then A. Starting with an Apple is key...but it should be more compelling than this. B - The pear signifies similar functionality but different taste from the Apple, which is exactly what FruitMenu is :) Posted by: Josh Zerin on March 8, 2005 10:44 PMJosh: Nooooooo!!! :) I hate pears. They sort of look like apples, but I think are disgusting. Mealy, sandy, etc. MS Windows is a pear. Posted by: Ken on March 9, 2005 6:24 AMC - As mentioned already, the apple is way to overused. I'm a fan of the cherry look. But as long as you don't use the 3 fruit one I don't care so much. :) Posted by: Brett on March 9, 2005 8:58 AMWell, C looks a little bit too much like, uh, a twig and berry. But then maybe the phallic subtleties are a good thing. What about a cornocopua? Those thanks giving fruit filled things horn like things? Posted by: mwc on March 9, 2005 9:28 AMB Glancing at the Apple doesn't immediately make me think specifically of Fruitmenu. It kind of makes me think, "Uhm. It's an apple..." But the pear makes me stop and think, "What... what is this? A piece of fruit? OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The rest I hate. Posted by: kwyjibo on March 9, 2005 11:00 AMI like B most, but I guess for most users A would be the one that says the most about the app and what it does. Posted by: Japser on March 9, 2005 11:59 AME. I like the current icon. I totally agree with JackSim, so option A is my favorite! Posted by: lorelei on March 9, 2005 2:12 PMMeh. A is the best option. Pears are yummy, but not appropriate in this case... cherries are just... meh. A, definitely A. Posted by: Simone Manganelli on March 9, 2005 2:27 PME - i want to see Unsanity-Family icons for all your applications. Posted by: MaX on March 10, 2005 1:07 AMDefinitly A. When a user is looking through their PrefPanes, thinking "I need to change my Apple menu", A is the one that'll pop out at him. Nice icons, Jasper! Posted by: Jason Harris on March 10, 2005 5:58 AMHa! Option A apparently won! Take THAT all you A-haters. ;) Posted by: Simone Manganelli on March 10, 2005 11:54 AM |
