The Child of Darkness Still Wishes to See Tomorrow

Labels 1.6 is ready for release before the keynote on Monday.

  • Removes the Finder menu for Panther
  • Made Labels X function with Panther
  • Labels X will now modify the stripes shown in the Finder and open/save dialog boxes while running in Panther.
  • Added options to specify whether or not to draw the name stripes or the icons with labels.
  • Now makes the ~/bin/ folder invisible when the preference pane is first opened.
  • Installs the Contextual Menu Item Module for Jaguar only now.
  • Now sets label colors and names if set via the Finder.
  • Now resets the label names to their proper label names assuming the user has not customized them before installing Labels X. If they have, only the unchanged label names are fixed. This means that Yellow is no longer Pink. Pink is now "In Progress".
  • Added a "Relaunch Finder" button. It relaunches the finder.
Digg This!

i tried v1.6. it works fine but i have 2 questions/suggestions:

1. even when i uncheck label icons, folder icons still are colorized in the list view (they remain w/o color in icon view). can this be avoided? like it is in panther?

2. if icons are not colorized and no color strips are drawn, there is no label. can you make it draw a label on the side? for example, labeling the folder triangle itself and/or placing a colored circle next to file/folder name when in list view (like it is in panther when the file is highlighted)

Thanks Rosyna! I'm at an earlybird session at WWDC and was psyched to finally get some bearable labels back. I immediately changed the colors to 50% saturation and am no longer going blind.

Oh, and it works great so far.

Please don't think I'm being snarky; I love unsanity's products. But would somebody please explain what one uses these labels for? I understand that they were very much missed from OS 9 (which I never used), but I just can't quite understand why they are useful. So some example uses?

Posted by: Mat on June 27, 2004 12:23 PM

Uses, you say?

1 Grouping of files!
2 Sorting of files!

Example; What manga I have read in Preview, what Divx files I have see while on a flight, what files are IMPORTANT, being 4 out of 100 in my 'ToRead' folder.

I don't use icon labels anymore, as most of my life is now spent in list view.

And Rosyna? Got some bugs for you (mailed..) :D

Thanks for Labels X

Question: Why does the order of the colors differ from the Pref pane and the Finder?

Pref Pane lists them in this order

Essential
Hot
In Progress
Cool
Personal
Project 1
Project 2

while the Finder or Contextual Menu lists them as

Hot
Essential
In Progress
Project 1
Cool
Personal
Project 2

Would be nice if the order was the same.

Also seems to be a noticable difference in Finder speed when Labels X is enabled or am I dreaming?

In any event I'm happy and thanks again.

Small problem. Labels X is 'slightly' incompatible with Drag Thing. Drag Thing has an 'Item Option' for setting Label colors for items in it's docks. This no longer works as it appears to be refering to Apple's Labels rather than Labels X. I don't know if this is an Unsanity or Drag Thing problem but it's worth mentioning.

Kevan, how do you mean incompatible?

You are probably dreaming about the speed difference as the finder only touches labels once (which is why a relaunch is required.)

And the finder has the labels order wrong. Very wrong. The order is correct in every other application.

[Kevan, how do you mean incompatible?]

As I described above. When you select a Drag Thing dock item there is contextual menu option for setting the color of that item. When you select a color nothing happens...meaning the item doesn't get colorized. It's likely a Drag Thing problem as it's pretty easy to see that it's looking at the Apple Label colors. How do I know ...well the little dots for each label color are rounded as they were before installing Labels X. After installing Labels X the little dots are flat. Do you know what I mean...easier if I could send you a screenshot. Never the less it's not a problem as any items colorized in the Finder when dropped into a Drag Thing dock are properly colorized using the Labels X colors.

[You are probably dreaming about the speed difference as the finder only touches labels once (which is why a relaunch is required.)]

that's probably what I noticed or even more probable ...I WAS DREAMING ;-)

[And the finder has the labels order wrong. Very wrong. The order is correct in every other application.]

ok ok ok don't get mad at me ;-) Thanks for the explanation. I assume there's nothing you can do about it. Maybe 10.4 has fixed it

thanks

Changing the colors associated with the label has an effect if you have "draw labeled stripes" checked, but seems to have no effect if labeled stripes is unchecked and "apply labels to icons" is checked instead. I get the default colors no matter what I do.

I'm sure it's not my color-blindness. I've tried associating the label "Personal" with Yellow, Black and White, restarting each time -- no change whatsoever in the color of an Icon labelled Personal. The Labels menu in the finder changes appropriately, and any enabled stripes have changed.

Feature request: how about adding a button which would allow us to Revert the colors to the default values, after we've messed them up completely...

by the way, this is VERY COOL... :)

Dear Rosyna, thanks a bundle for what appears to be a functional haxie under 10.3.x. Now, since you're in Labels X mode, perhaps it is the right time to wonder how the app can be further improved. If it were possible to disable name stripe coloring *only* in list view, for instance, the app would definitely be nearer to perfection. Not being a developer, I don't know whether I'm asking for the moon, but if it's possible at all, please give it a shot. Et merci encore.

Hi!

Just wondering what the status is on ShapeShifter -- (i.e. if there is an update coming out soon, and what the timeframe to release it is.

Posted by: Krishna on June 29, 2004 3:04 PM

Cool...I want it...I want it NOW!

Posted by: CREB on June 29, 2004 7:22 PM

Really good to have it back !

I wanted to start a French version. Well, I could find and adapt the "Localizable.strings" file but not the "LabelsX.nib". The one I could find is the 1.5.1. Am I doing something wrong?

Posted by: Bernard Rey on June 29, 2004 10:57 PM

Krishna, ShapeShifter 1.3 is progressing well. I've been coding steadily on it for the past two and a half months and am currently ramped up to end development in the next few weeks and move to testing. There have been large changes, so i expect testing to last for awhile.

I won't set an expected ship date, but you can probably make an estimate from what I just said. :)

Just had a look to see if you had posted up the new version of Labels x. Have you delayed it because you have come across some bugs that need ironing out?

looking forward to the upgrade.

Typo in the download link.

The link is 'h ttp://www.unsanity.net/labels-x-16.dng' (space added for readability)

The nib included is the correct one. LX removes items dynamically from the nib if Panther is loaded.

Many thanks to the Unsanity team for my beloved Labels X again returning to the X-Scene.

Posted by: CREB on June 30, 2004 9:14 AM

Excellent work, thanks mucho for getting this out!

One question - this is probably a Finder bug, but, when a Finder window is viewed as Icons, and in the View Options, you have "Keep arranged by" set to "Label" - there seems to be no effect at all; i.e. the items are arranged by name.

Any possibility Labels X could somehow provide a workaround and make this work properly? ;-)

Thanks again.

You've probably already received a hundred or so reports of the same thing, but it appears as though Labels X is responsible for "suppressing" custom icons in Finder Sidebar (search also for 'sidebar haxie' in Apple Discussions).

When Labels X is enabled, while removing/adding folders with custom icons (e.g., Home, Documents, Applications, Desktop, Pictures, etc.) in the Sidebar, it is possible to suddenly no longer see the custom icon for such folders; the generic blue folder icon appears instead (although the custom icon might flash on briefly before vanishing if you use Finder->Preferences->Sidebar to click them on and off).

Disabling Labels X is not enough; one must disable the APE Manager altogether; logout/login; remove Sidebar items; replace Sidebar items. One can then logout/login again, and the custom Sidebar icons may or may not remain until you try to add/remove/rearrange them again.

Not a big deal if you never make changes, but if you use Sidebar to alter ready project folders daily, especially those using custom icons, chances are you'll ruin it all, and have to start over.

On another note, I think APE Manager and cumulative haxies are really getting CPU-heavy; i.e., application launch times and new window opening times have always been adversely affected with APE enabled, but it has gotten ridiculous of late.

E.G., on my G4-533/1.5GB DA, Safari and iTunes will launch in <3 seconds without APE + haxies; they both take ~12 seconds each with APE + haxies. Other applications are even worse. This seems to run contrary to the mention of minimal load delays referenced in the FAQ.

I have sent numerous reports of this to support@unsanity.com, including lengthy, detailed benchmarks, and I have yet to receive a reply on the matter. Is this a dirty secret no one likes to talk about, or is there something wrong with my config that can be addressed?
