Update 11/23/02: This entry will be updated as I take new screenshots.
I've been working on a new version of Silk lately, this version will have a new "Font Substitution" feature. This feature was primarily vengeance against Arial and other icky Microsoft fonts based on other real fonts from real foundries. These images are kind of big and IE may have a problem displaying them. If it does, hold down the option key and click the link.
Font Substitution... TO THE MAX!
Do not ever set the minimum font size to 25
Silk and FruitMenu make a cute couple (really big, 300+k)
IE versus OmniWeb
Explorer Menu
Finder stuff. How is it drawing?
More Finder windows, not sure how the menu title or the names are drawn.
The Finder has violated me for the last time! Do not try this at home kids.
The Connect to Server box.
The finder and the System Preferences (Silk)
System Preferences for the new Silk Font Substitution tab.
New System Preferences for the new Silk Font Substitution tab. Looks horrible. Suggestions?
New Showing the fonts. Wacky. Anyone know how to fix this?
New Word. Word. Word. I hate Word.
By the way, the font you see in the font settings in Word is Lucida Grande Handwriting. It's the font I use (2019) to test to see if a call I am going to "patch" actually does anything. I use this font because it's changes are very noticeable.
You can drag any item from the right to the left. If you drag it over an item on the left, it will place it in the replace column. You can also drag a text clipping from any application to the Silk preference pane and the same rules apply. I plan to make a movie to show all of this when it gets ready for release.

Font Substitution is great idea. Can't wait to try this one out.
Posted by: Daniel Von Fange on November 9, 2002 8:46 AMOkay, that is REALLY cool. I, too, am sick of websites specifying Arial, the worst font ever created. I can't wait for this.
Posted by: Jeremy on November 9, 2002 5:30 PMSweet. Still no Menu font replacement, huh? Still, it's neat we can replace the Finder's fonts. Does this work on the desktop too? What about the Dock's shadowed titles?
When's this coming out??? :-D
Posted by: Jason Anderson on November 10, 2002 5:05 PMOoh.. Fonts under menus are changed! I hope you find out how to do the menubar too... Or did you?
Weird Al.. heh. :-)
Posted by: Jason Anderson on November 12, 2002 12:56 AMSave OSX from itself. :)
Starting with Jaguar, the OS allows you to turn on anti-aliasing when the screen is set for an 8-bit mode. This is a pretty rare condition, but if you happen to be running a game, you now get funky-fonts. It would be swell if Silk could somehow detect that the screen is in an 8-bit mode and temporarily disable anti-aliasing.
Posted by: Brad Oliver on November 13, 2002 1:56 AMI really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really want this! :-D
Posted by: Jason Anderson on November 15, 2002 2:56 AMWow, I'm really going to have to check this out. I just got a 17" Studio Display and especially the Lucida Grande system fonts get all distorted with font smoothing turned on. All the LCDs do this. Changing the font may really help this.
YES! You got Menu fonts! I can die happy now! Well.. after I try it first! ;-) Now.. all it needs is a release date.
Posted by: Jason Anderson on November 16, 2002 2:21 AMThis is a such great start!... but SO much more can be done. I have an idea for font management in OS X. Someone from Unsanity PLEASE PLEASE contact me asap.
Thanks, Chris.
I know this is completely off the intended topic, but I'm curious about what appears to be an IM client running in the command line. In this screenshot it appears as though the transparent Terminal window is running an IM client of some sort. If anyone knows what this is, I'd greatly appreciate an email.
Posted by: JDL on November 25, 2002 2:56 AMHow about a MAX point size? That way the horsey size that apple hase decided we need for the menu bar can be controlled.
Posted by: JWeber on December 4, 2002 1:07 PMThis looks too damn good. OS X is a far cry from OS 9 when it comes to customising bits and pieces, especially fonts. Why Apple hasn't built this functionality into the OS I do not know. Not everyone loves the same font *everywhere* in *every* application.....
Keep up the work, I can't wait for this to be released :)
