ShapeShifter Goodness Again
ShapeShifter 2.3.1 has just been released. No, this version is not yet a Universal Binary, but we're working on it... I believe Jason's quote was "It'll be ready when it's ready." ;) Oh, and in case you haven't heard, the Geek About Town himself got married a week or so ago! Congratulations Jason! If you're interested, there is a fine thread over at MacThemesForums showing off some of the event artwork by the prolific David Lanham. Back to the topic at hand... this update fixes a few issues that cropped up in the 2.3 release, specifically:

Thanks!!! As usual I always enjoy the latest and greatest of this haxie. Posted by: CREB on April 11, 2006 12:43 PM"Keep an eye out for more from us soon!" teaser teaser! :) By the time you will have anything universal out the guy who got married will have 3 kids already. I agree completely that the universal ShapeShifter release is past due. The blame for ShapeShifter and Mighty Mouse rests squarely on my shoulders. Juggling necessary ShapeShifter updates with new feature research and wedding planning has sucked up much more of my time than I would have expected. ShapeShifter isn't the sort of program where it's worthwhile to target development hardware and beta operating systems - it's so low-level that I always wind up with a large duplication of effort whenever I try. So dev didn't start until mid-January when the official Intel machines were released, and took a back-burner until March when SS 2.3 was released. And then took a back-burner due to wedding planning. Unfortunately, Unsanity is a small software house, which means that for the most part, one haxie has one developer. So again, my sincere apologies for the length of time the SS Intel build has taken thus far - you only get married once! Posted by: Jason Harris on April 11, 2006 4:33 PMJason, Some matters in life are far more important and meaningful, such as your wedding. People will always--and I do mean always--place demands on you no matter what the situation. It's not as though anyone is going to die if they don't get a Universal Binary version of SS or MM. Enjoy the life you have for as long as you have it. Posted by: CREB on April 11, 2006 4:47 PMThanks for the update for solving the photoshop & firefox problems. However, it stills crash my stupid M$ office 2004's powerpoint... (actually i use keynote mainly) Posted by: COOJ on April 12, 2006 7:03 AMIn fact, I suggest give up reading comments or get used to ignoring them except constructive bug reports and legit versiontracker.com "troubleshooting" (yes,no reviews) to work better and release a universal version. It is just an end user suggestion. We, real users take care about trolls at versiontracker etc :) Not "organized" of course, it just happens itself. just curious as to what's taking so long to get apps like windowshade universal??????????????? we've all been waiting a very long time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted by: len on April 13, 2006 7:44 PMIndeed, I would like to have any updates on the progress of porting them to universal code. I know you guys like to say "It'll be done when it's done" but it would be nice to have a blog post with some more technical details. What kind of code/API changes or problems are giving the most difficulties? Posted by: Jeff on April 13, 2006 8:01 PMIt astounds me to see how selfish some people are. What's up with this "gimme gimme" attitude? Instead of complaining about your precious Universal builds not being ready for you, why don't you go buy some books and learn how to build them yourself. Do something really spectacular and build your own theme customizing app. Oh and be sure to shut out the entire world around you so you can have updates ready 2 seconds after Apple changes something. After all, it wouldn't be good to make the end user WAIT. Posted by: eirich on April 23, 2006 9:22 AMerich- one problem i have with your reasoning is that shapeshifter is not free but shareware- and although not costing much still is paid for and unusable. I can wait for a universal version- i have no problem with that but until recently we were kept in the dark and that is not okay for shareware that has been paid for. and who mentioned '2 seconds' - how long were we - paying customers - kept in the dark since the anouncement? - it sounds like you have no relationship to people's gripes and are quite selfrighteous in a quite ignorant way. sorry but that is how your post occurs to me and i am sure i am not the only one. Posted by: sofa on April 23, 2006 12:10 PMI will have to admit that though ShapeShifter being shareware did cross my mind, my argument wasn't based around that. I am an IT administrator for a company that seems to shower it's employees with equipment and software that many times are not needed but just wanted. Vendors who come to visit are very surprised to see so many desks with two monitors just as an example. We have free onsite lunches and free items from vending machines as well, yet for about half of the employees this is not enough. I have actually had them ask if they can have three monitors and they're never quite happy with the lunches or the items in the vending machines. They've even asked if they can take food home for their family members. Now you see why I commented as I did. I tend to see some of these comments as coming from selfish individuals, not for their asking, but they way they ask. I've purchased almost all of Unsanity's products and have never been left waiting for updates for very long. I still say cut the guy some slack as getting married (and all the stuff leading up to that day) takes huge amounts of time, but you are right...SS is shareware and it does seem like a waste to have spent the money on something you can't use. Posted by: eirich on April 24, 2006 7:46 PMBeing IT administrator, you don't know how UNSERIOUS company Apple is? I know a game which their lead mac coder spending days and days re coding already working stuff after each OS update. Being playing with SDKs like monkeys and considered a "joke" in enterprise World just because of that, they now changed the CPU and LIED whole community by the hallucination of "just click Intel tick and it will work". Oh well? Why it took months for universal build of finalcut? Remember the final cuts price and compare it to shape shifter. Why I don't see your comment on Versiontracker about how late final cut pro is and the "universal tax" trick Apple did? Make no mistake, I bought a very expensive Apple just 2 days ago. I like Apple products and I see OS X the only alternative to Windows at home. I just started to get very irritated by "community" myself apologizing for stupid things Apple created and blaming small software houses. Apple have how many overpriced Pentium 4 boxes to try their product on? They have access to every single OS X .c file yes? How many months have passed until they could offer an universal FCP? What is the extra PRICE of upgrading to UB FCP? That is my point. While using and enjoying their geniusly modern coded applications (iDefrag), I wonder one thing. What would be you doing if Unsanity had such page? Better to have it done right than done fast, but I am quite eager. Now I wouldn't want to repeat somebody else's post neither would I like to sound like stupid or selfish or else.....but what is the new Shapeshifter Universal release date ? Seriously, are you guys waiting for Apple to release Leopard in fall or we can hope to see it BEFORE fall ? Just to retype what has been said about intel mac theming. Apparently there are several files that while they do the exact same thing in Intel and PPC OSX, are completely different in structure, which means that the guikits you already have wouldn't work on an Intel Mac even if Shapeshifter were available in a "sort of almost done" bridge to universal version. These are actual graphical elements which have to be handled by the app. AFAIK, that's part of why it's taking so long, it's not like making an office app universal. Congrats on getting married, Jason. Take as long as you need, cause that, among other things, is way more important. Posted by: Siroh on June 30, 2006 11:35 AMJason, congrats on the marriage. Its good times. I just wanted to get an update from you on the universal version of SS. Could you just bang out a quick blurb here as to the processes involved? Yeah yeah, I want my SS, but I'm patient as well, because I do understand that these things take time. For those that dont understand why some would want this software to come out as a universal, let me tell you something. I own www.spaceagepc.com, and I just bought ALL of my techs new intel macbook pros. Switching over from our 12" g4's that were all customized with our logo, our color, new menus, and a custom SS theme for the GUI. One of my techs built this in 2 weeks. So while the app might be cheap, its one of my more expensive tools right now. Its a form of advertising in our line of work. Just give us an update, and I'm sure everyone will be happy. Thanks, Well, I just bought the new black Mac book. Im pretty happy with it but I wish Shapeshifter would come out soon. That is all. Toodles. Posted by: Mike on July 15, 2006 12:56 PMthey should just make an intel patch for ss and mm that would be quicker than rewriting the program Posted by: maddog on July 21, 2006 8:25 AM |
