Got it

Posted by: David on October 26, 2004 11:18 AM

Ok, I am seriously underwhelmed.

What is the big thing except mighty mouse is included and desktops can be changed?

What a letdown.

Fails on Tiger with no good error message, contrary to System Requirements: Requires Mac OS X 10.2 or newer

Posted by: Cap'n Hector on October 26, 2004 11:36 AM

Brian,

...and the entire Unsanity Team--you have outdone yourselves with SS2. Absolutely, unequivocally outrageously good! I have NEVER been let down by Unsanity.

Posted by: CREB on October 26, 2004 11:36 AM

I can't understand the negative comments...this is now an integrated package with so much more to offer in the way of convenience. And Tiger is not even out. What gives people?

Posted by: CREB on October 26, 2004 11:42 AM

DON'T INSTALL ITUNES 4.7!!!!!!!!

Installing iTunes 4.7 will BREAK SS v2. (and maybe earlier versions)

After installing iTunes 4.7 no metallic windows are themed.

I installed iTunes 4.7 and I got a message from SS telling me that iTunes will revert back to default and I needed to reapply the theme.

Now, NO metallic windows are themed. No itunes, isync, Finder, address book. nothing.

I don't think this is a bug with SS but until there is a workaround don't install itunes 4.7

Posted by: David on October 26, 2004 12:12 PM

David, good catch. Here's the fix for this until we can get an update out that resolves it:

If you are using iCan, it will crash on the first restart. You must exclude it in SS2's panel.

Posted by: CREB on October 26, 2004 12:42 PM

David...
What is the big deal!? I realize that the convenience of changing desktops, icons, and cursor sets may not seem like much, but what it does is allow a more complete makeover of your system without having to pay for candybar or pixadex or whatever.

More importantly, however, is the added features that themers can use to make a theme more complete. Things like title bar transparency, the ability to customize the finder's sidebar, and most importantly the ability to specify font colors for more things. A dark theme is now very feasible since you don't have to worry about text not being visible!

Jason...
I love SS 2! Good work guys.

I don't know what features you have planned for the future, however I just thought I would point out a couple of things I still wish shapeshifter would do:

1) It would be nice if Cleardock were integrated into shapeshifter somehow. Heck, while you are at it add metallifizer's capabilities so that people can convert all windows to one type with a particular theme if they want.

2) I wish my theme came with desktops... I like having the list view for all theme components but it would be nice if I could categorize my own desktops the same way the ones included in a guikit are. I have a lot of desktops on my computer and it would be so much easier if I could package them to go along with one of my themes.

3) iTunes can be skinned, however I have seen a few skins (such as the new azure) which change the color of the iTunes display. This looks great when the display is just giving you the track information but I always zoom iTunes and have the equalizer bands playing which DO NOT get themed. I assume this is a problem with the way SS themes iTunes, but it may just be themers not implementing it properly. Either way I would really like to see this changed!

Thanks for taking time to read this post.
...Michael Martz

"Fails on Tiger with no good error message, contrary to System Requirements: Requires Mac OS X 10.2 or newer"

I don't think their lack of support for an unreleased OS X version is really a problem. I doubt many software makers are advertising total compatibility with an ever-changing not-yet-released operating system. Expecting it is just expecting too much, really.

As for the iTunes 4.7 thing... what's the deal there? Glad there's a fix for now, but I don't understand how iTunes can actually affect SS's theming of all metal windows.

Also, is it just me, or is the Download gallery showing up blank? Maintenance?

Anyway, as I said in the last entry, I'm quite pleased with the update. All-around improvements, some I expected, some I didn't. Great job as always.

Posted by: Michael Salbato on October 26, 2004 1:33 PM

I installed iTunes right after Shapeshifter, then the new quicktime, and restarted. Not a hitch. I would like to echo the desire to see some effective dock skinning come back onto the scene, and who better to take that baton than our favorite team of theme-app creators! BTW- I paid for the new Candybar when it came out - it has abilities that Shapeshifter probably never will, including the ability to change the document icons INSIDE of applications, safely. No regrets there, and I love the convenience of changing systemwide icons inside of Shapeshifter. Add to that the update of Synergy, and I'm one happy guy today! Great work, y'all!

Posted by: ryno on October 26, 2004 2:37 PM

okay - I changed my mind about the interaction between Candybar and Shapeshifter. I wanted to use Candybar to change some icons in apps, and to use some of the older Somatic system icons, but in order to do so, I had to sacrifice having the system pref icons since they're part of the guikit and not individual icons I can use in Candybar. This is frustrating, since I assumed that the two applications would work in concert wonderfully. I'm going to request of D.Lanham that he post the iconset he's using in the guikit on it's own, so I can get around this issue...

Posted by: ryno on October 26, 2004 7:57 PM

ryno,

I too own CandyBar and love it. I wish the following companies would all come together as one: Unsanity, Panic, and Rogue Amoeba. Don't ask me to name the new company, but it would surely be one helluva union.

Posted by: CREB on October 26, 2004 8:14 PM

Just a note to say how much I appreciate ShapeShifter 2. It has so much potential for theme developers. I can't wait to see what Max Rudberg, Harlan Lewis and Kevin Husted bring to our computers.

As you add new features it would be nice to be able to set the desktops of attached monitors from within ShapeShifter.

Thanks Jason and the folks at Unsanity!

Posted by: Glenn Lucas on October 26, 2004 8:25 PM

After a long hiatus, I've reinstalled Shapeshifter. Version 2.0 is GREAT! Everything feels snappier. Kudos to Unsanity!

I've looked and haven't found anything about whether this will recognize my old Shapeshifter registration, Do I have to send you more money?

Posted by: Bill Hedrick on October 27, 2004 6:48 PM

Re: Registration
Nope. You will not need to purchase a new registration code. Or at least, I didn't have to....

Re: iTunes
iTunes 4.7 did not break ShapeShifter on my system.

Posted by: Josh Zerin on October 27, 2004 7:54 PM

Another thing that I would like to see in SS, expecially with the download pane now, is version control of some kind for themes. For example, ss could ask the user if they want to replace an older version of a theme with a newer version. Or even better automatically check for the theme to be updated and allow the user to apply the update...

Posted by: Blacktiger on October 27, 2004 10:08 PM

iTunes 4.7 broke my SS 2.0. Tried the fix. The prefpane opened, but quit after a few seconds. This is the same behavior before applying the fix. Had an experience similar to David's, except that my prefpane won't open, or stays open briefly, so that can't take any action. I had earlier loaded up SS with iContainers. lots of desktops and some MM cursors. Had LCDPro GUIkit installed at the time, and had added a new desktop with SS.

Posted by: Rohn on October 27, 2004 10:21 PM

I also installed iTunes 4.7 and I got the same message. I have also noticed that the menubar in the finder is aqua and not the theme, but when i click on a non apple app, it is in the theme.

Posted by: David Stehl on October 29, 2004 12:02 PM

All was fine until I opened iSync. ShapeShifter told me that iSync was old and that I should open ShapeShifter to reapply a theme. ISync did continue to open with Aqua.

Now, everytime I use ShapeShifter, my Finder stays Aqua. And as soon as the Finder turned Aqua, all subsequently opened apps are Aqua too.

Do I need to delete a pref somewhere?

Posted by: Jacques R. Blier on October 29, 2004 4:21 PM

The forum thread saying how to reset the preferences fixed my Finder and other Apps. No more Aqua.

Thanks.

My sister is a newbie to Macs, a switcher. I set her system up carefully. I'm a longtime classic Mac OS user and have been with OSX since the public data.

I do consulting work and support approximately 160 Macs.

She installed ShapeShifter and trashed her OS. I have no idea how. It was purring like a kitten. Uninstall didn't work. I'm now tediously going through the installer pkg. with Pacifist to identify all the pieces. Not much fun doing this by email and telephone from 3 states away.

I might mention in passing that APE is banned from all supported machines due to its conflicts with Bare Bones Products which can sometimes be resolved, sometimes not.

Shape Shifter is very cute. There are other cute products. I've paid for 3 or 4 of the old haxies. But if APE endangers the functionality of two of my key apps and those of my clients, not to mention other apps which are suspect, then it deserves to be on the same list as ShapeShifter.

What went wrong? I have no idea. But I'm not looking forward to walking her through a wipe and OS install then a reinstall of all the pieces of the $3,000.00 worth of software she has that's backed up and lives in /Library, /Applications and ~/Library.

What a mess. Doubt this post will last very long.

Posted by: SteveO on October 30, 2004 12:26 PM

Oh I forgot. No pkg. Just that uninstall that doesn't work if the user has trashed some files (and natrally can't empty trash). Super Get Info will solve that problem (or XRay, I forget what I had her buy) but the remaining pieces in the libraries? Who kinows. One lousy .nib file and all the rest tucked away in the Installer(s) or somewhere else. MainMenu.nib. How very clever. And a pslist as long as my arm. Not haxie, but Hack-sy.

Posted by: SteveO on October 30, 2004 12:46 PM

Re: SteveO, since you didn't put a real email address, there is no way to contact you.

Sounds like she installed a theme via a theme package (which changes system files) and not via ShapeShifter.

That and the fact shapeshifter doesn't come in a package format so you can't open it with Pacifist makes your anecdote somewhat moot. And no, there are no known compatibility issues with any Bare bones product and any APE we make.

Posted by: Rosyna on October 31, 2004 2:04 AM

I am still having the same issues I described in the email but no one ever got back to me :( I am a paying customer. I was getting the non-themed apps even without the new itunes and quicktime. And also, I have the crazy thing going on with iSync. I had to turn it off. I would rather just got back to the old one since I don't use any of the new features if thats ok, you can just email me the old one. Any word on when the fix will come though? I registered with joshabryant@hotmail.com.

Posted by: Josh Bryant on October 31, 2004 4:29 PM

Hi,

I'm posting here because my email from 10/31 maybe got lost somewhere.

In that email, I mentioned three things:
. when the system gathered my updated registration information, it screwed up my first name (Raphaël became Rapha?)
. if the 'Restart Dock/Finder' check box is not checked, ShapeShifter anyway restarts the Dock
. the ability to have a 'clean cache' feature that might be usefull for people that, like me, are running with a relativelly short disk space

This morning, I sent a second email, because ShapeShifter displayed a dialog telling me that the demo mode expired... and reset everything to aqua. Having requested my serial numbers through the automatic retrieval system, I thought I could use the Register button in the preference pane, as explained in that dialog, but this one is disabled... because the registration information is valid.

In an attempt to solve the issue, I removed the ShapeShifter preferences out of the preference folder and restarted but that didn't work either, the Register button is still disabled. I suspect the serial numbers are not stored there...

Do anyone know how I can solve this issue?

Thanks,

Raf

Posted by: Raphaël Josse on November 4, 2004 11:40 PM

Hi,

I eventually found the file to remove, it was located in another domain preferences folder. Anyway, I re-entered my registration information manually and things are back to normal.

I'm just hoping I didn't trigger another demo mode countdown and next upgraded registration processes will work in a smoother way ;-)

I look forward to trying this out again. I've been on a 600 MHz iBook for a while, and well, I don't want to install any Haxies yet until I get a much faster machine. But I look forward to having a cool looking theme again on whatever 'Book I get next year.

Posted by: Jason Anderson on November 30, 2004 11:59 PM

tell me, why $20? it's cool, no doubt, but why charge $20 for it? if it was cheaper, i might consider...

does anyone hav the rego code for 2.0 i cant find it on the net any where

Posted by: zac on March 10, 2005 1:44 AM

Hi,

I tried to use ShapeShifter into my old iBook 366 MHz PowerPC G3 320MB SDRAM MacOS 10.3.1. After installation, I couldn't load the ShapeShifter in System Prefs. but instead I got message 'Preference Error'. I tried to restart my iBook, but after that the icon for ShapeShifter in System Preferences disappear without reason. How Do I solve this problem so that I can use ShapeShifter? It's really cool software and I ready to pay for it.

Posted by: Kevin on March 19, 2005 11:42 AM

I installed Shapeshifter 2 to check it out and decided not to buy it once the trial ended. Problem is that once the trial turned off, my mac has been having problems even though I went into system prefences and turned it off. Bummer.... I actually came to this page to findout how to completely uninstall it.

Posted by: dj_white_rice on March 24, 2005 7:04 PM

Waiting for a Tiger update.
Almost didn't install Tiger because I was afraid it wouldn't work with Shapeshifter. Great product, guys.

Posted by: Gany Black on May 1, 2005 8:27 PM

When I install ShapeShifter 2.1.1 on Mac OS X Tiger, I get an error message, "Could not load ShapeShifter".

hows it goin i recently downloaded the demo of SS2 and installed it on my computer just to try it out. for some reason its not changing anything. i email support about it and didnt get a reponse. i took the liberty of uninstalling and deleting all SS files that i found and reinstalled. It still didnt work. then i decided to create a new user on my mac to see if it worked....well it did but when i get back on my admin account it still refuses to work. im runnin tiger if anyone can help. i really like the app but i would like to know if its gonna work if i buy it thanks

Posted by: MgGava on January 30, 2006 11:16 PM

shapeshifter is genial, but i have one problem with the finder in the slot-view: if i mark a file in the the finder - only during the "slot-view" - normaly the selected file will have an "inverse" color-selection. if shapeshifter is running the "inverse" color-selection will not clear after clicking an other file. for example, if there are 4 files in the slot, and i click file after file, all files are "tagged". when shapeshifter is "off", than the finder is working fine. it doesn't matter whether theme is selected! i'am using 10.3.9 / G5

hi guys i just installed ss 2.5 on my new mac nd along ith it , it installed application enhancer .
now after installing when i try to open shapeshifter it shows me a message saying
Could not load ShapeShifter preference pane.

Posted by: pavan on February 25, 2008 8:05 AM

Same problem as Pavan.

I am REALLY disappointed.
I spent all afternoon downloading and installing ShapeShifter, App Enhancer and Mighty Mouse, and NONE of them work. I have a brand new Macbook running MacOS 10.5, and it doesn't work at all.

It has screwed up my Preferences, the panels don't load, and if that's not bad enough the Uninstall doesn't work and no matter what I do I can't manually delete the files, so I'm stuck with them and God knows what else on my computer.

Absolutely woeful. If anyone can help me to either fix it or get this junk of my computer I'd really appreciate it.

I just ran the latest Tiger update, and it seems to be blocking ShapeShifter's ability to skin both the finder and iTunes. Any fixes for this problem?

Posted by: Andrew Lawandus on February 9, 2009 8:14 AM

OSX 10.4.11
Quicktime 7.6 "update" has ruined Shapeshifter.
Shapeshifter doesn't skin the Finder, iTunes, or SlimBattery Monitor.

Posted by: 10.4.11 User on February 9, 2009 9:13 PM

Hey hey!.. this ShapeShifter program would be totally sweet if it worked 100% on the Finder... i'm considering the $20 investment, but before i buy, i've got an issue... right now, all the icons on the right side of my menu bar in the Finder work with whatever theme i load, but the menus on the left side don't load as the theme... other applications seem to load the theme fine in the menus but i haven't tried them all yet... i've got Finder version 10.4.7 and i'm running 10.4.11 for an OS... any solutions?.. seems like i'm not the only one with this problem... thanks...

Posted by: TypesetThis on February 16, 2009 5:41 PM

Yup! Same problem with QT 7.6 and 10.4.11 here.

Posted by: carlos on March 8, 2009 9:30 PM

I just updated my os to 10.4.11 and now my finder doesn't skin either. Very disappointing. I have paid and registered my product. Here's hoping that a fix is right around the corner.

I hate having the same looking OS as the next MacNerd.

Posted by: Nick on March 10, 2009 1:01 PM
