Product Pricing
So after a long hiatus from Slava's...err, the company blog, I get the task of letting you all in on a recent decision Unsanity has made. To get right to it, we have decided to raise the price of our current lineup of products from 7 bucks a pop to $10. Believe it or not, this was a tough decision to come to for us. We actually liked providing our products at dirt cheap prices. Seven bucks became somewhat of a signature price for us. Remember, this is not an upgrade charge. This will be effective for new purchases only. Those of you that already own our current products will still have free upgrades for the life of the product. We think $10 per copy is still a great value for our products, it's still dirt cheap, it's just a higher grade dirt now. ;) But we always like to play fair, so we're not going to switch the price until February 1, 2003. That gives anyone who has been waiting to purchase a chance to snag our products while they're low-grade dirt cheap. (Note: the "dirt cheap" is reference to price only, not the quality of the product....the products are of course "pure gold") This change will help us to be able to continue to improve existing products even further and innovate and bring more cool products to Mac OS X in the future. So thanks for listening and for your continued support. We do hope our users understand and have faith that we'll deliver sufficient value to erase any doubt on our price. So hold the mobs/riots/demonstrations please! ;) Trackback Pings: TrackBack URL for this entry: Related:

Unsanity is about one of the few organizations where I have no problems with a $3 increase, because they do damn fine stuff. :-) Now, try to charge me $5 for a thing that puts the wrong level of Homeland Alert on my menubar, I'll get a little grumpy. :-) Posted by: Mike Harris on January 24, 2003 2:17 PMSeems fine to me. You probably could even charge more per item and then give package deal for buying 3 or more. I think ActionFiles does something like this. Once my design customers start upgrading to X, Quark where are you, most are going to want FruitMenu, WindowShade, and Labels. They are also going to want ASM, but you don't make that ;) Ever thought about some kind of a affiliate program for your products? Posted by: T.T.Z. Enterprises, inc. on January 24, 2003 2:29 PM$10 is fine - your products rock (luckily I bought 'em while at $7, so I'm safe!) - I just hope you will always keep your "no charges for updates for life" promise! ;) Posted by: A customa' on January 24, 2003 2:50 PMHey... Your guys rule. The stuff you make is well thought out and innovative. And you have constant updates to all the apps. Not to mention all the free updates for life. I dont even use fruitmenu anymore but i'm still a proud owner of a fruitmenu license and knowing that i can go get it again if they come out with new features that would make me want to use it again gives me a nice warm feeling :). $10 is nothing for the great apps and support you guys provide. Posted by: seven5 on January 24, 2003 3:52 PMYour prices were and still are very low for the incredible value your software provides. Thanks, and best wishes. Posted by: Scott on January 24, 2003 3:55 PMYour prices are still great, hopefully the $3 price increase will get you additional staff that will answer email for support questions... Posted by: Mike Skultety on January 24, 2003 4:20 PMI think I'll make alternative versions of these silly "haxies" (HATE THAT NAME BTW) and give them away for free. Posted by: rick on January 24, 2003 5:03 PMproud menushade x owner --- 10$ is still a great price --- dont go to $15 ever though --- that kills it. Posted by: on January 24, 2003 5:35 PMRick - if you can do it, do it. I'm sure every single Mac user will bow to you when you release them for free. NOT. Posted by: rick's challenger on January 25, 2003 1:32 AMHomeland Alert works just fine for many many people. Last time I looked every single piece of software never claimed to work perfectly for every single possible configuration of Mac OS and Mac hardware ever produced. Apple's own software often has numerous problems such as the brand new Keynote or QuickTime 6.1 (Apple there is a process called public beta testing, that would have at minimum alerted you to the compatibility problems with QT 6.1). Posted by: ExitToShell on January 25, 2003 9:16 AMUnsanity is one of the few companies that actually make you proud to bring out your wallet. Keep up the great work! Posted by: Court Kizer on January 25, 2003 1:19 PMI support the move wholeheartedly... if it keeps the beautiful work coming, how can it be bad? A $3 increase for a lifetime product sure beats paying full price every major update (read: Apple's method) Posted by: Brian on January 25, 2003 2:58 PMI was at CompUSA and I see that Aladdin Systems is doing a utility bundle that includes FruitMenu and Windowhade X. Reminds for of the old Now Utilities back in the System 6 days. I think you are too young to remember then ;) I'm a bit sad. The US $7 was kind of a branding feature. It's a haxie, it costs $7. Makes you look twice because it's kind of an odd price. And also makes it easier to pay, because it's a one digit number. It just looks cheaper. I would have kept the price below $10, maybe at $9 or something. Posted by: LKM on January 26, 2003 4:23 AMLKM: true, but most people are not sold off these "9.95" tricks nowdays -- at least I always round it up to next dollar when I see something like $9. So it makes no real difference, IMHO... Posted by: slava on January 26, 2003 6:22 AMActually if you want to really increase revenues you should make your utilities network aware so that whole offices don't share one serial number. If you don't get all strict on corporations, though, you gain a larger following, even if they don't all pay you. I'd *love* to register all the software I use. Over time, I actually managed to register almost 80% of my Mac software. In the meantime, I can tell friends to go use it with a good conscience; it'll work for them, and they'll probably pay for it -- and even if they don't, they'll tell one of their friends, and so on. In the end, I'd take the distribution over profit. Posted by: Richard Soderberg on January 26, 2003 10:08 PMI have LABELS X and my 'blessed' FRUIT MENU bought fruitmenu and loved it on OS 10.1.5. since jaguar nothing but grief with that ridiculous APE setup. can't believe the products are getting worse and the prices are getting higher. KISS. that's what i liked fruitmenu for. makes me very glad i didn't buy windowshade X. Posted by: unhappy fruitmenu custome on February 13, 2003 6:38 PMKeep comments on topic.
