Minimize In Place for WSX

Well, as promised, here's a summary of my own thoughts and your comments for the future Minimize in Place implementation for WindowShade X.

  • Minimize-in-place (MIP) will be available as an additional minimization style choosable from the WindowShade X style popups.
  • A window minimized with MIP style will be transformed into a tiny window outline ("MIP windoid")
  • MIP windoids will have customizable:
    • Opacity
    • Window level (float above all windows in the current app, float above all windows, behave like regular windows)
    • Parent application icon overlay (should it be displayed or not)
  • Also, I think MIP behaviors can be customized:
    • Minimize and leave the MIP windoid at the same position as the original window;
    • Minimize and auto-dock the MIP windoid to the corner of screen of your choice;
    • When maximizing a MIP windoid, make it maximizable by single or double click;
    • When maximizing a MIP windoid, make the original window expand in either its original position, or in the MIP windoid position.

I dunno if the sparse notes above make much sense to you, but please feel free to ask, rant, and discuss this featureset draft with us (in the comments section). Thanks!

On OS 9, option-collapse collapses all windows of all apps. I'm assuming MIP will do the same. I'd like option-SHIFT-MIP to minimize all windows of all apps, but also organize them onscreen for me in rows. Each application should get its own row, of course. If there are too many windows to fit (!), decrease the size as needed. Etc.

As far as I remember, option-collapse only collapsed all the windows of the application parent of the window you clicked (bear with my wording...)

I'm someone who always writes to software vendors asking them to create an option to do X, Y and Z. I can honestly say that the level of customization you have planned for MIP is unbelievably awesome.

I've used the old beta version of Dock with the MIP functionality and it's wonderful to see you guys bringing it back (and doing it better). Very excited :)

The customization options you listed for MIP windows
sound fantastically useful; I can't wait to see MIP in action on my computers!

If Rob W's suggestion of mass-minimizing windows and having all windows of a given app lined up is possible, I'm hoping you'll pursue that feature.

As a PowerBook user, I'm always concerned about screen real estate --- how to use it most efficiently for my work (and play), and I've never been comfortable with virtual desktop strategies, which make sense only if one _always_ uses the same sets of applications in concert. I think a more windows-centric arrangement, which MIP offers, will make many people happy, and will offer major advantages over minimizing windows in the Dock, and having to search for them there five minutes later when one wants to work with them again.

Here's my question: Would it be possible to over the option of different _sizes_ of minimized windows? Obviously, small is good, but "too small" presents the same problems as a very crowded Dock in terms of finding the document you're looking to maximize.

Another question (probably too wild a fantasy): Would it be possible to have MIPS behave as minimized dock items do --- i.e., when you pass the mouse over them, you see the title of the document?

Thanks for listening to our suggestions. This is going to be a killer utility.

I agree. The feature that I miss the most using the old Dock beta is the mouse-over lable that shows the title of the window.

Another idea might be to be able to set certain applications, or maybe certain windows of certain applications, to automatically minimize to a certain place. For example, I might want my main Mail window to always minimize to the Dock, but any other windows in the program, such as message composing windows, minimizw in place so I can see them still (I have the Dock set to auto-hide.)

Just a few thoughts. Sounds like an awesome undertaking.

All I ask is that you make it PRACTICAL.

For example WindowShade in MacOS was a lot more practical when used with a theme like NeuTech. Currently the title bars clutter too much.

I don't have a use for window icons, I would rather have the titles of the windows.

The only other feature I'd want in MIP would be the ability to see windoid titles when I mouseover. Other than that, it sounds awesome.

Unbelieveable. I absolutely cannot wait for this functionality. Your thoughts on it are exactly what I had in mind, too. To be able to "auto dock" minimized icons along one corner/edge of the screen would be a dream come true. Only thing I can add is, if even possible, to be able to make them stay grouped by app.

Thanks!
