Minimize In Place?

Me again. I think it's a good idea to add MIP features to next major update of WindowShade X. (Somebody tell me why did Apple remove it in the first place? Anonymous Apple engineers involved? Anyone? ;) Thing is, we'll have to implement it on our own. This gives me some minor headaches, but also brings an amazing opportunity on implementing it the Right Way(tm).

So, since I am still occupied with future projects like Labels X (see below) and 2 anonymous other haxies, I would like to her your feedback on how do you think minimize-in-place should work. Then, in about a month (hopefully), I'll be able to get to WSX and implement the whole thing.

So its your turn now - tell me how MIP should work. Be unsane enough and don't limit your imagination. The key word there should be usable'; the second keyword, as usual, should be 'pretty'. =)

Digg This!

I am using the Apple version of MIP, and my only issue with it is that the minimized window can only be one size. If you implement MIP, could you make it able to mizimize from 16x16 to 127x127 sized icons, set by a slider in the WindowShade X Pane? One more issue, the minimized icons float above every window it seems. Can you make that customizable?

By the way, I disabled WindowShade X after installing the MIP dock. Can they work together?

They can work together flawlessly actually. It gives you endless possibilities.

Tabbed windows! I want to be able to drag any window, in any application, to the edge of my screen, and have the window turn into a tabbed window. I'd use this on Terminal windows, iCal, entourage, Proteus, Calculator, etc....

please please please!

For me the most important feature would be the ability to maintain current dock keyboard shortcuts which currently disable with the MIP program (i.e. command-opt to hide other apps, etc.).

Minimize In Place was one of the new features I really enjoyed about the developer previews of Jaguar. I'm glad someone found a way to use the old dock with X.2, but it seems a little buggy to me with icons changing, turning black and white, etc.

I agree with the dock keyboard shortcuts staying the same, while also implementing something to the effect of whether or not you want the MIP'ed windows to go behind all open windows to the desktop, or just float above the windows your using. Also, to be able to change the size of the MIP'ed windows.

I saw a few months ago on the MacNN (I think) forums about why Minimize In Place was gone.

Somebody said,

"A hundred freakin' bucks to whoever can bring it back! (That probably means a hundred freakin' bucks to Unsanity.)"

Well, he was right.

Slava, another idea I had was that you can add something to APE that will allow APEs to have their own sub-modules. That way you could have WSX load modules that contained Cocoa and Carbon code for custom minimize effects, and the MIP could be implemented in that form. I was already working on an APE hack that does that, but I thought I'd suggest it to you...

Nobody seems bothered with the loss of modifier keys in MIP. Call me the un-unsane but I fail to see the point. Sure, MIP seems cool at first, but so did the genie effect. After a while, it just seems to take up space. Perhaps if transparency could play a part this could be resolved.

Wow... I really like that tabbed windows idea. Slava - jump on this please! :)

oops, posted in the wrong thread...

I would much prefer the next feature to be an extra title bar button which when clicked creates a popup scroller which would change the opacity of the window contents.

I would also VERY much like a haxie to make the title bar only as wide as the title. WindowShade was a LOT more useful in MacOS when one used a theme like NeuTech since the title bars wouldn't interfere with oneanother.

Another thing, I may be wrong but WindowShade doesn't appear to tell the app that the window is minimized which the app sometimes needs to know.

Aw crap! I almost forgot...

There ought to be a mouseover on the edge of the windows which change the cursor to indicate the window can either be moved or resized! Having to use the oversized title bar sucks.

I like borderless windows in Aqua (they look really nice) but an invisible handle would be useful.

just knowing the name of the window when u roll over it could be cool...,))

Another nice feature would be to allow for a place for these MIPd windows to go to on the screen. It's annoying sometimes to have to move the newly minimized window over to the side of the screen.

I guess that's not really minimize in place then though, more like minimize-to-non-dock-location.

An Old thread i am commenting on here, but i've had MIP running for months now, and its very nice to have the option of using it. However, i've had the vision, of when minimized windows were floating, as soon as they were minimized ... they could glide to a desired area of the screen, instead of minimizing, and remaining where-ever the fill window was. So yea, it would be great to see them shrink to their preview, then glide across the screen, to say the 'right side of the screen' ... it would make nice eye candy too, if they could glide .

Any Comments?! ... I dunno if anyone will ever read this, but its worth a shot!

Mouse over on a MIP icon should bring up the name of the window (as it does when it is minimized into the dock)

the option to have the MIP icon to be in the background unless the finder is selected might be nice

ALSO: i love this idea of Tabbed windows on the edge of the screen, mentioned further up in these posts
