Labels X Universal Public Beta
So finally, our last remaining not Intel compatible haxie, Labels X, is making its rounds to the Intel compatible land. Among Intel compatiblity we've also improved the per-process memory usage of the haxie. The "old" code that was rewritten from scratch ages back to early 2002, and it had the "we gotta allocate plenty of memory to make sure we never run out of it" approach. Now it's fully dynamic (as in "get it when we need it" approach), and as a result, the footprint Labels X puts on the app's memory is... minimal. So even if you don't use an Intel Mac, you're more than welcome to upgrade. Note that 1.8 loses 10.2 compatibility, it now requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or newer. While I am eager, I'm not complaining. No doubt we would all rather have a (delayed) stable product than a bug-ridden Labels X that is timely. "The bitterness of poor quality lasts much longer than the sweetness of meeting the schedule." Still, have you a target release date? Looks great, so far. Well, almost - problem is, when in list view sorting by label, it's sorting by label *name* - rather than by label index number, as it should... (or... if there's differing or a new philosophy about this... then make it a user-selectable pref). Posted by: Ed Mechem on December 6, 2006 7:17 PMAlso, unlabeled items are sorting before all the labeled ones (again, in list view), unlike how they should (i.e. they should come afterwards, as they've done in previous versions, and as common sense would predict...) Posted by: Ed Mechem on December 6, 2006 7:22 PMWeird! OK, final comment from me tonite. False alarm, on both accounts (sort of). One change to the pref pane, one restarting of Finder, and all's well. Even though I'd restarted after installing. So, something isn't getting 'touched' until the user makes a change, even across a restart... Glad to see it's a relatively small configy thing, not something bigger broken. Looks great! Thanks. Posted by: Ed Mechem on December 6, 2006 7:28 PMAhhhhhh, what a relief. After years of elegant labels and manageable colors on previous machines, I've been wincing at the Labels-lessness of my core3duo desktop. The new iMac screen is big and bright and should be beautiful, but I 've been wincing at the noisy, clunky look of those stock system color stripes. Thank you for putting that pain behind. I don't give a hoot how the items sort. Next time we have a revolution of Mac innerds, how about adapting Labels first? Posted by: Howard on December 7, 2006 4:06 AMLabels X crashes the releaunches the Finder when I use the Recent Items folder menu option. Problem didn't exist before I installed Labels X, and went away when I remove it. Eagerly anticipating next beta version as I had to remove the current version. Enjoy.......G Posted by: Gary on December 14, 2006 8:30 AM |
