iTunes 7 and Unified Windows
Yeppers, it's beta time again! THIS SHAPESHIFTER BETA DOES NOT FIX ISSUES WITH ROSETTA!!!!!!. If you're on Intel, Photoshop and Word and whatnot will still crash unless you run "sudo killall translated" from terminal before you launch your Rosetta app. Sorry about the shouting — I've been shouting it for the last two betas and people are still reporting it as though we don't know about it. :) It's a toughie to fix, as you can probably tell by the fact that, well, we haven't. So what does this lovely new beta do, you may ask? It makes windows with a unified toolbar "just work" for existing themes, that's what! The accompanying ThemePark release also adds the stuff to customize them individually, but I really don't recommend it. I've explained why in more detail here - long story short, you can't do much interesting stuff the way Apple implemented it. Better to just let ShapeShifter do the voodoo for you. This ShapeShifter build also re-enables iTunes 7 app skins IF your theme's app skin was created for iTunes 7. Since the accompanying Themepark build fixes some issues with theme template creation for iTunes 7, it's unlikely that any themes like this yet exist if you're reading this 2 minutes after I posted. This build also updates iContainer support for both ShapeShifter and ThemePark. Drag in an iContainer and watch the magic happen! Finally, this build fixes an issue that could cause certain themes (cough, Graphite Ultra_thin) to crash during apply if iTunes 7 is on your machine. Have I mentioned that I didn't much enjoy the release of iTunes 7? :) Okay, I suppose you want the goodies now:

Hey Jason, I was wondering ABOUT when will the full shapeshifter be released? Thanks! Posted by: Andrew Lee on September 15, 2006 5:35 PMnew beta does not draw everything for me mail's top bar, sys prefs top bar...aqua! can i still dL previous beta? Posted by: fisherking on September 16, 2006 7:13 AMi have the same problem, the previous beta works better than the new, can you put back the b3 online? Posted by: val1um on September 16, 2006 2:52 PMAfter installing this beta, I used the latest Themepark beta as well to make a guikit. I then tried to use the guiTweak with the latest SS beta to hue shift. Well upon pushing "tweak" in the SS pane, guitweak opened but no window ever came up. In effect guitweak does not seem to recognize a theme at all. Older versions of guitweak such as the standalone app, recognizes the themes but when trying to save the guikit it comes up with an error. Using OSx 10.4.7, Intel, SS Beta4, Themepark Beta 5. Posted by: Comie Prevette on September 16, 2006 7:51 PMAlso, I would like to suggest making it an option to have the new unified "just work" and the old method of just deactivating unified and using the default aqua. Some themes are not meshing very well with this "just work" method. It looks like the metal bevels are being used for the top titlebar section and it looks really awful on a lot of windows Posted by: Comie Prevette on September 16, 2006 8:18 PMSame here, GuiTweak is dead... it loads up, but does nothing... Posted by: FB Eye™ on September 18, 2006 1:19 PMSecond request to have an off switch on the unification. I'm getting the same funkiness with the bevels on the ends of where the titlebar woulda been, but no bevels in the toolbar portion, if that makes sense. Looks terrible. Posted by: joeheathen on September 18, 2006 9:35 PM....just wanted to add to the above comment. My theme uses a vertical gradient as opposed to a solid color for the toolbar element...don't know if that may be contributing to the glitch. Posted by: joeheathen on September 18, 2006 9:39 PMyo when I open the terminal, and if I type "sudo klllall translated", I am suposed to enter a password... But where have I got to find it ? sudo commands require an administrator password for your computer. Posted by: stridey on September 20, 2006 9:31 AMsame here - unified toolbars DON'T "just work" in some apps. Mail, iTunes (tho I think that's a special case), Sys Prefs, iPhoto. zlu - you must be an admin user to use sudo in the Terminal, it's not like OS admin privilege dialogs where you can also enter the admin user name. If you are not an admin user, you can still accomplish this: make sure Remote Login is turned on in your Sharing prefs, then in the Terminal type 'ssh admin_user_name@localhost', enter the password, then 'sudo killall translated'. Posted by: kyngchaos on September 20, 2006 10:24 AMkyngchaos, WHAT??? Do you have ANY idea what you said there???
Funny, but with ShapeShifter 2.4b4 installed and activated, my Epson Perfection Photo 2450 would not work, wasn't recognized by any app. Without SS, it does. RD Posted by: Roberto on September 21, 2006 4:07 PMDamn, it's so quiet over here that I can hear the scroll wheel on my mouse... Posted by: CREB on September 26, 2006 4:44 PMUnified toolbars broken here too (at least with the Shinobi theme). System Preferences, Mail, etc... do not fully skin. Going back to b3... Posted by: Jose R. Perez on September 27, 2006 7:46 AMPrefPane does not load on 10.4.7, says: "You cannot open ShapeShifter preferences pane on this computer. Contact the developer of this software for a newer version." Thanks Jason Posted by: Patricio Marquez Domenge on September 29, 2006 10:08 AMUhm, Patricio, dude, the fix for that is in this very post you commented on. Posted by: Rosyna on September 29, 2006 10:44 AMANY changes, updates? It's been a few weeks now :) R Posted by: Ryan Clark on October 2, 2006 7:35 AMEureka! Sort of. : ( Remember the early days of OSX? Updating pre-bindings was said to reverse impotence and cure leprosy? Well according to this report it really really works. In our case it cures the Rosetta issue (until the next restart). Since I did it I can not create a situation where a Rosetta app fails to launch. As there are 4 or 5 such apps I use daily I had a hot-keyed script I could easily invoke, but it required just that - several times a day having my flow balk while I did it. Updating the pre-bindings on my MBP takes about 30 seconds but is done once and forgotten. Posted by: FugaMas on October 3, 2006 7:20 PMI'm getting an odd problem with the bars at the tops of windows, as well. Namely, they're turning white, in an otherwise black theme. It doesn't happen every single time (just most times), so I know it's not a feature of the theme I'm using. ... Oh, and my trial ran out today. So I probably won't be able to play around with it much. I hope future beta versions will be freeware... *nudge nudge* - Void Posted by: Void on October 4, 2006 1:45 PMNot sure why it wasn't included nor how to get a link into a post, but here's how to get to the link for the prebinding sorta fix for Rosetta. Go to Guess I gotta learn how to embed a link. Posted by: FugaMas on October 4, 2006 6:12 PMRemote Desktop MenuExtra still displays the wrong icons for the state. Text Boxes still have border issues (this very box I'm typing in has no visible border... Unless it's hilited, it looks like empty space... Posted by: Bobby T. on October 4, 2006 10:05 PMOdd... I never noticed that! I am having the same issue with text boxes. Posted by: Ryan Clark on October 5, 2006 9:59 AMhi Here's a link to beta 3 of ShapeShifter, which was stabler and worked much better: http://www.unsanity.net/beta/shapeshifter-24b3.dmg Posted by: Takuro on October 14, 2006 5:45 PMShapeshifter beta 4 is killing my Candybar application. If I set Shapeshifter to default aqua icons then Candybar is unable to change many icons including Finder and Trash. I don't use very many icontainers to use with Shapeshifter, I take my icons indiviually from a lot of places, which is why I invested in Candybar. Any suggestions on how to get around this? Thanks. Posted by: wilwarin on October 14, 2006 6:47 PMMore than a month have passed! Where's full version or fresh beta? I want to know what I'm paying for - nothing works right! Posted by: esXXI Pro on October 17, 2006 9:24 AMFor people who are having the rosetta issues, I created the following in an applescript so I can quckly run the command without having to remember it. You run it, it prompts for your password, and then click okay... It's very convienent... At any rate, the script: do shell script "sudo killall translated" with administrator privileges and password Posted by: Bobby T. on October 22, 2006 1:51 PMAfter installing the latest betas of ShapeShifter and APE it sucked up just about all the memory on my MacBook, even after rebooting. So I went back to the previous beta of ShapeShifter. The excessive memory use is still there and now SS gives a Preferences Error saying, "You cannot open ShapeShifter preferences pane on this computer. Contact the developer of this software for a newer version." Does this mean I should rollback to the previous APE as well? Posted by: Latrent on October 24, 2006 2:00 AMHas Shape Shifter been forgotten? How long has it been since the last blog post? When will the next update occur? Any other specific time other than "soon" PM? I'm so anxious man..I 'm sssoooo anxious. My Intel Aqua settings are beggining to drive me past insanity. Without Unsanity, I'll never be sane again. Mainly because, it freezes a lot of my Rosetta programs. (even when disabled.) Also, Safari wouldn't open, untill I realized, I had it turned to rosetta mode. (dumb me.). Still, If it was on my intel Mac Pro, it caused issues.. so, I took it off, sadly. Though I have given it some thought, and I know how busy projects can get at times, and how others always seem to get in the way. I've come to realize, with OSX Leopard coming around the corner this spring, why bother with another beta for tiger? Seriously, I know, some of the pre-existing users would at least need something. But, Universal is universal. Once made for Leopard, it'll work in Tiger, (older themes that is.) Seeing that Universal is a bigger deal now than ever, because now the new operating system (like Tiger) is basically built for those faster multiple processors. Honestly, I personally would rather wait a little while longer to have an amazing product which I know Unsanity always produces and maintains, than to have a whole bunch of beta versions that of which only provide a quick tease. So, that is why I'm not currently using the beta. Posted by: Toby on October 30, 2006 10:24 PMthe link for Shape Shifter 2.4b4 only allows you to download 2.3.1 what gives?
