Well, it's officially here - FruitMenu version 3.1.

  • This update is free for all registered users, as usual.
  • A list of installed Application Enhancer modules is now displayed in the System Preferences submenu for the APE Manager.
  • New "Display Folders First In File Listings" option in the Advanced settings to make FruitMenu display folders on top of all other files in the file listings.
  • Updated for Application Enhancer 1.3.
  • Significant speed optimizations.
  • Mounted Volumes are now displayed in all contextual menus and not just when clicked on the Desktop, due to many users requests.
  • Fixed a bug with certain contextual menu items not working when Apple menu is not enhanced.

Does this version fix the Apple X11 crashing bug?

Posted by: Nicholas Riley on July 22, 2003 10:05 AM

Nicholas: I have been unable to reproduce it with v3.1.

Okay... fine ;) And what's the status of Panther APE ? :)

Love it!

yay!! .. oh wait .. wont work in panther dp. waaaaaaaa!

I don't really need FruitMenu in Panther DP ;) More APE himself !

Much faster! App launching speed seems to have gotten a boost as well. Good job.

Actually, my only beef is that you can't add the Mounted Volumes item to the Apple menu.

Hey Slava,
Do you think about a little bit more customization for FruitMenu, such being able to put the Apple Menu in the middle of the bar like in OS X Public Beta :)

Posted by: Clems on July 23, 2003 1:42 AM

I agree with d00d Mounted Volumes should be in the Apple menu.

Here's one solution for the Mounted Volumes request...

% ln -s /Volumes ~/Library/FruitMenu\ Items/Volumes

I used another method myself but forgot what it was and can't look it up right now since I don't Jaguar here anymore.

According to the bundle info in the new APE that got installed with FruitMenu 3.1 there's a new 1.3.1 release of APE in this package. By the way, this version solves all the problems I had with the dock (finder arrows and sound).

Thanks!!!

In FruitMenu 3.1,
"Mounted Volumes are now displayed in all contextual menus and not just when clicked on the Desktop, due to many users requests."

But I want you to also support former specification as enabled only clicked on the Desktop.

Thank you,

I was hoping to see support for a feature that I requested in this new release: the ability to change the size of icons in the FruitMenu Apple Menu. I'd really like to see icons in there larger than the paltry 16x16. Is this on the dockett at all, Slava?

Feature request: I would love to be able to eject mountable media in FruitMenu. I envision putting a CD in my computer, open a file from the CD in FruitMenu, and then being able to eject the disc from the same menu.

#1. You couldn't eject the disc if you had a file on that disc open.

#2. The menu would close as soon as you clicked on the file to open it. You'd have to right-click again to get the menu up again, and then eject.

Don't get me wrong, I coudl like this too. But your reason doesn't make sense.

Two practical uses:

A disk image with an application in it is mounted on the hard drive. I can open the application, and if I determine that I don't like it, then I can eject the disc in the contextual menu. All of this would could be accomplished without activating the Finder in any way.

I can put a disc, unsure of its contents, in my computer. While in my Web browser or Mail or whatever, I could view the list of files that is contained on the disc, and if I don't need anything, then I could eject it then and there. Another way of avoiding the use of the Finder (directly).

I can think of several more instances that are more practical than that first rushed post that I made. Maybe not a lot of people are as eccentric in their computer use like I am, but it seems like if the drives are going to show up in the menu, it would be beneficial to be able to eject them, too.
