Charging For Silk Part Two: Deus Ex Machina

There seems to be nothing I can do about Cocoa's "Unique Font Handling" I've tried and tried and tried. The most I can do is just disable those fonts all together.

Silk 2.0 will be the final of Silk 1.5 (Silk 1.5 alpha has been pulled from this site.)

So now. Should I name the new Silk "Silk Pro", "Silk Extreme", "Silk Plus", or "Silk PEP (Pro Extreme Plus)"?

The old silk 1.1 will *not* be updated. There is no way to separate the current code base without making it unmanageable (preference system and the like). However, when the new Silk expires, the features that were in Silk 1.1 (And the new "Prefer Outline Fonts") will *not* be turned off. This has little to do with generosity and more to do with my laziness in finding a way to implement it. ;)

I am not sure the demo period of Silk 2.0. It could be anywhere between 5-15 days.

Please, which one of the above names do you prefer? I personally prefer Silk PEP because it mocks the others.

While not a Silk user myself, I'm with you on that one. Reading it's press releases all over the Mac web will be awesome. :D

i don't even know what Silk is yet, but i definitely like Silk PEP the best. please use that!

I know that sarcasm is poorly translated on the web, so I'll retract my earlier suggestion of 'Extreme'. That would be terrible. Terrible like a bonzai kitten.

On the other Hand, Silk Pro Extreme Plus (or Extreme Pro Plus, or Pro Plus Extreme) would rock my socks... or something to that effect.

Silk Peppe:
Silk Pro Enhanced Plus Power Extreme

Posted by: LKM on March 13, 2003 3:09 AM

Now THAT's a good name.

(In all seriousness though, Rosyna, "Silk" and "Silk Lite" are probably your best options)

Posted by: Chris on March 13, 2003 3:26 AM

I agree, Silk (for version 2) and Silk lite (for the old Silk 1.1) is the simple way forward. Silly additions to product names is not a benefit to the consumer. SafeShred being a prime example ? it has three entries on Version Tracker:

SafeShred Free 2.0.1
SafeShred Pro 2.0.1
SafeShred Xtreme 2.0.1

Each version downloads the same file! the only difference being if you pay more you get more features activated. Need I go on?

Stick with just Silk.

Rant over.

I agree with Chris. I say the PEP version call simplt 'Silk' and call the free one 'Silk Free' or 'Lite' or whatever.

Since it'll revert to 1.1 functionality after the beta period, I see no reason to change the name at all.

By gum I think he's done it! Amazing how the thread loses you though, isn't it? O! What a tangled web we weave!

Posted by: Chris on March 13, 2003 12:56 PM

I think you should change the name from Silk to something else.

After all, Silk was first a very limited program that only activated smoothing.

Now it does so much more.

Why not Royal Silk as it will be a cut above the original?

Posted by: Steve on March 14, 2003 5:06 AM

Steve, silly, you must respect the alphabet.

Posted by: Rosyna on March 14, 2003 6:56 AM

Silk PEP sounds like a soft drink. But I like it. Good name.

Silk Metamorphosis?

Posted by: CREB on March 14, 2003 7:49 PM

Silk and Silk Light.

Posted by: Mike on March 14, 2003 10:42 PM

Silk was/is a nice name because it described what the program did...it made the rough fonts smooth as silk... :)

what about bilk? a synonym for the word trick, as in magic - slight of hand, since the primary function of the haxie will now be font switching.

I realize the normal use of the word bilk is not very nice but I just thought I would throw this in....

I would keep Silk as is, and call the new haxie Bilk.

Please, please, PLEASE write a "haxie" to *DISABLE* the Quartz text rendering and smoothing EVERYWHERE in OS 10.2.4!!! What a disasterous, undisableable "feature."

Posted by: bachelorbob on March 16, 2003 7:22 AM

Disable the anti-aliasing... I can't imagine why, from what little I've seen of aliased text on MacOS X having the entire interface like that would make me puke =).

Posted by: Rincewind on March 16, 2003 10:32 AM

Silk Extreme sounds cool.

Posted by: NetworkShadow on March 16, 2003 11:46 PM

What about SuperSilk?

Posted by: Crowspeaker on March 19, 2003 11:18 AM

Silk Platinum Ultra Rockin' Stupendous Extreme, or Silk PURSE.

[sorry. these things just come over me.]

Posted by: Tim Merritt on March 19, 2003 4:30 PM

PowerSilk could be a name for an even more advanced version of Silk

Posted by: wolfo on March 25, 2003 11:38 AM

why Deus Ex Machina? Anyone?
