3D Cube: Fun In The Sun

So... I am working on APE working with Fast User Switching in Panther, and having lots of fun. It crashes while switching, leaving pretty pictures on my monitor, like this one (it is stalled, and not a motion shot) -

Either way, I've made good progress on the Panther implementation, and will probably post a development build of apesdk for you developer types out there in a few days.

Any news on whether Metallifizer can kill the metal in the new Finder?

Posted by: Phil on July 15, 2003 12:50 PM

whoaaa, easy on that huge popup.....

Posted by: Jon Maddox on July 15, 2003 1:11 PM

Agreed with both posts. Has the metal Finder been banished, and whoa, that is a huge popup. =D

The finder is metal in the same way as you can apply a metal theme to the Aqua UI today. It's not true metal; i.e., you cannot grab windows anywhere metal, just at the top. Removing metal from the Finder will probably require replacing some resources; it's not really the job of Metallifizer IMO.

You can drag Panther's finder windows around by the side and bottom.

If you click on the 'hide toolbar' button (in the upper right) then the toolbar, the quick access area on the left, and the sides and bottom of the finder window go away and all that is left is the metal bar at the top of the window.

I'm posting this from Panther right now.

That's great news, but is there any chance you could update the APE 1.3 release to fix the sound and finder arrow bugs in the dock?...

:)

If the Finder is metal in the same way that you can apply a metal theme to the Aqua UI today, then it is indeed true metal.

If the Finder uses system-supplied metal ui widgets, it will require zero replaced resources and it most certainly is the job of Metallifizer. At this point my original question is raised again, will Metallifizer be able to modify the Finder? Is the Finder using system-sanctioned metal widgets or is it instead using it's own custom crap á la iTunes and Quicktime?

BTW, to the poster asking about APE 1.3's problems with the arrow under the Finder on the Dock (essentially, the Dock does not think the Finder is running) - of all things, the security update from yesterday seemed to clear up the problem for me. Of course, my three e-mails to Unsanity support about the issue went unresponded to...

metallifizer doesn't kill metal finder on panther using panther ape.

Posted by: rudy on July 15, 2003 10:53 PM

It seems for me Security Update 2003-07-14 can't solve APE 1.3's problems with the arrow under the Finder on the Dock.

Hey, Slave, could you make a Haxie to enable the 3D Cube on Macintosh not having Quartz Extreme ? It works in Keynote, why not in the Fast User Switching ?! Thanks...

Ooops :) sorry for the Slave, Slave !

Slava ;)

"It seems for me Security Update 2003-07-14 can't solve APE 1.3's problems with the arrow under the Finder on the Dock."

In every technical way I fully agree with you. But there it is.

And back on topic... aww, the whole point of Metallifizer on Panther is going to be to get rid of the metal Finder! Apple *still* can't use their own API's...

Posted by: Joshua on July 16, 2003 12:10 PM

Clems: heh, that's an easy way to remember my name I use sometimes - "like a 'slave', but with an 'a' on the end". ;)

Metallifizer: I haven't yet investigated, but I don't think it would be way too hard to do.

Stay tuned.

And it would be very appreciated. I would certainly register a future version of Metallifizer if it had that ability. And if, of course, it was shareware.

I haven't had any problems with APE itself, but I cannot get ClearDock 1.2.4 to work. When I click the 'Apply' button, the Dock appears to reset itself, but it just comes back up looking the same as the default Dock.

When I click on the 'Enhanced Applications' tab in the preference pane, nothing is listed there (I assume the Dock should be listed here).

I have tried placing the ClearDock.ape file in both ~/Library/Application Enhancers and /Library/Application Enhancers. Any ideas or suggestions??

TThe docTHe dock is changed in panther

Posted by: Court Kizer on July 18, 2003 12:16 AM

Sorry safari crapped out on last post. the dock is different in panther and cleardock has to be rewritten. Don't use APE for now it can cause problems for you.

Posted by: Court Kizer on July 18, 2003 12:17 AM

Aha...wish I'd read this before trying to get it to work...

Posted by: tmpchaos on July 18, 2003 4:57 AM

Sure, the best moment of the week will be the release of "APE for Panther"... Please work like a Slave to give us it as soon as possible, Slava ;) lol

Posted by: Clems on July 18, 2003 8:26 AM

Slava, has anyone mentioned lately that you kick ass and do impossible things seemingly on a daily basis? Just wondering.

Posted by: Joshua on July 18, 2003 12:47 PM

I can't wait for APE for Panther... my current development on my new APE module has all but halted... I'm running Jaguar on my old Blueberry iBook but it just isn't the same...

Go go coding on APE for Panther.

Posted by: Markimus919 on July 18, 2003 12:57 PM

woo, a new ape, what's it do? ;)

Posted by: rudy on July 18, 2003 5:28 PM

So looking forward to APE for Panther it will allow me to use Windowshade again :)

Posted by: Deggy on July 19, 2003 8:53 AM

APE for Panther will be a godsend. Yeah, I miss WindowShade, and FruitMenu, but what I would kill for right now is an iCeCoffee. Clickable URLs everywhere: I need 'em!!!!!!!
