Spectacular Catastrophe: WindowShade 4.2b2

And thus, it is thrust upon this world.

If there are no humungous (rada rada) issues with this beta 2 of WindowShade X 4.2, then it will be cleaned up a little and released sometime next week. I strongly suggest everyone changing the update check to daily as 4.2b2 won't be around that long.

There is one small change to this update. The donate panel in the preference pane has been removed. It has been replaced with a voluntary upgrade fee (vuf) panel. This is mostly because WSX is like totally 7 years old.

Seven Freakin' Years

Anywho, here's what's new in beta 2:

  • The price of WindowShade X has increased from $10 to $13.50.
  • MIP windows no longer appear below the bottom of the screen in 10.5.
  • MIP windows now respect the Dock size in 10.5.
  • No longer uses CGSUniqueCString().
  • Addressed a bug that caused a MIP window to expand into an invisible window when clicking on the Dock icon when all windows in the application are MIPped.
  • Now allows windowshading of the iTunes 8 window when double clicking on the title bar.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when closing all windows (option click close widget) in Cocoa applications.
  • Addressed an issue that rendered WindowShade useless in Firefox 3.x.

Some of these changes should please some people.

Not much to say other than happy window shading!

Hmmmm, this caused something to crash, called SystemUI or something like that, several times. The crash windows went away after several times of hitting the ignore button plus disabling Windowshade X then re-enabling it. If it happens again I will report it here. So far everything is working fine for now.

IMPORTANT: There was a small issue with the SystemUIServer and WSX. This has been fixed. Please either redownload 4.2b2 or just run the updater.

Now that's what I call fast action. Good work and thanks.

Posted by: George R. Bridges on September 21, 2008 1:52 PM

I have still no joy with MIP. I removed the pref file, removed the APE, removed the prefpane, rebooted, and tried setting up MIP on the double click of the title bar with all windows being stacked on the right from top to bottom. Result? Pile-up on the top left corner, one window on top of the other, until I select the top window and all get re-organized on the right from top to bottom. Then the first MIP I do after that, all on the top-left stacked directly on top of one another. Console does not show anything odd and no errors. I had the same thing happen when it was installed for all users and now it is installed for just me. No change.

HELP!?!

While it's still timely, I should mention that the menu bar clock does not appear unless I turn off WindowShade (4.2b2). The clock then behaves normally after turning WindowShade back on.

Posted by: Bill on September 21, 2008 5:05 PM

Same deal here with the pile-ups of MIP'd windows, was happening with the last version, too, so I haven't been using it. I have a dual monitor setup, if that's got anything to do with it.

Posted by: joeheathen on September 21, 2008 8:11 PM

Well, I deleted the windowshade x preferences, and it fixed the pileup issue for about two minutes. It worked as expected UNTIL i changed the MIP'd windows size and opacity to my liking, and checked off use "Large" app icons icons. Now they're piling up again. Sigh.

Whatever you changed between WindowShade 4.2b2 and b3 fixed my menu bar clock problem. Thanks.

Posted by: Bill on September 21, 2008 9:26 PM

Using spaces on a MBP 2.4 under 10.5.5 - MiP simply puts all windows to the top left corner of whichever space I'm in, even though they should be along the bottom, starting on the right. Any thoughts?

Posted by: Geoff on September 21, 2008 11:15 PM

I've tried 4.2b3 with a fresh plist and still get the left-side MIP pile-up. Steps to re-create issue: change double click on title bar to MIP, turn on MIP arrangement, change arrangement to start at the right top and then change the base size of the MIP image (increase or decrease). Verified that only starts after the last step. In fact, I can change, enable, or disable any other item on that tab, but once the Minimized Window Size option gets changed, top-left pile-up.

If you never change the option, I guess it's okay...

Posted by: zenhermit on September 22, 2008 7:57 AM

I have finally noticed (now that I haven't change the default window size so there's no left-side pile-up) that the MIP windows are not dealt with correctly Spaces-wise. When I switch between Spaces, the windows that were MIPed in that Space are there, but with the other MIP windows having a blank there. Also, if I take a window to another Space, MIP it, MIP all the other windows of that program in the program's original Space, when I un-MIP the windows in the other Space, it re-appears in the program's current Space , not the one it was originally MIP'ed in.

Maybe these MIP problems are based on how it handles Spaces?

Posted by: zenhermit on September 22, 2008 8:05 AM

Just a couple of thoughts on Spaces handling. As I don't know how I'd use MIPs in regards to Spaces, I'd like to see a couple of options.

First, each Space has it's own set of MIPed windows, exclusive to that Space. They should only un-MIP in that Space also.

Second, keep all MIPed windows visible in all Spaces. There should be a sub-option to either un-MIP the window in the original Space it was MIPed or to unMIP it in the current space.

That second option may also need an option to show the Space the MIP window's from in addition to the Application name and/or Window name.

Suggestions based on how I could use WSX and how I currently use Leopard.

Thank you so much for the Windowshade update. Working good for me in 10.5.5. Now if I just had LabelsX back my life would be complete?! :)

Posted by: macscot on September 22, 2008 7:29 PM

Thanks for the update. FYI, LabelsX would complete my life too. I have my voluntary upgrade fee for that one ready and waiting. Nudge, nudge, know what I mean.

Hi, the newest Window Shade (today, 9/23) v4.2 has the same problem as before: Clicking a minimized Finder window makes it disappear. Does not happen with aplication windows, however. Leopard 10.5.5, MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo.

Posted by: Charlie on September 23, 2008 8:08 AM

Although WSX wasn't created primarly for that feature, you just removed the reason why i bought WSX in the 1st place : custom window shadows. I had high hopes for the Leo version of WSX because of the ridiculously overdone window shadows, and now my only hope is gone. Sigh...

Posted by: FB Eye™ on September 24, 2008 1:19 PM

Pleased to report I no longer see the problem with Finder windows disappearing (Sept 23 comment). Works fine now - not sure what changed.

NUC (note of unsolicited compassion): Don't feel like people are piling on about the pile-ups - your loyal users are helping with testing and providing valuable feedback ;-) And: It's understandable that Spaces introduces entirely new layers of complexity to address; hope everyone in the user corps gets that. On the bright side, look at everyone who cowboyed up to pay the VUF (rada rada)!

Keep up the good work.

I love OS X, but I hate Aqua. When will you have ShapeShifter working in Leopard? I desperately want my Plantinum theme back.

Thanks.

I know requests of the updates are not likely to be received, but I just could not resist to ask if there are any possibility we'll see XSOUNDS and LABELX at all. I have been buying your software since the very first release of FruitMenu and WindowS. and I ma ready to pay again for your updates, but it would be great to hear some lead from Unsanity team. I am using KeyClick but its just not the same. Thanks a lot for your continuos support of the Leopard. Macs experience would not be the same without Unsanity goodies. At least for me. Mike

Already submitted a bug report via email about this, but thought I'd mention it here as well. The final 4.2 release will not make Xcode transparent. There's no workaround for this.

When applying transparency to Cocoatech's PathFinder application, the first invocation makes the window transparent, but the second makes it disappear. The only workaround is to quit PathFinder and restart it.

These are two of my more heavily used apps. If/when these bugs are fixed, I'll donate an upgrade fee.

I can't seem to assign a new hotkey shortcut to the Default Settings. I add a new event record by using the "+" button in the lower right-hand corner. When I "Double click to assign a hot key shortcut" the field is highlighted for my input. I type a desired hot key and the field loses focus without registering my input.

I have WSX v4.2 and I'm seeing a continuous stream of messages in Console:

10/25/08 9:07:45 AM com.apple.quicklook[9713] quicklookd[9713]: [WSX] Will not load into com.apple.QuickLookDaemon as the hard coded exclude list says no.

I assume this is referring to WindowShade. Are you aware of this?

Posted by: David Morganstein on October 25, 2008 6:40 AM

I am running WS 4.2 on an C2D imac (10.5.5), the minimize in place still does not work (places windows on top left corner regardless of the setting). I have deleted all prefs and associated files, installed 3 times, uninstalled 3 times, to no avail. The download for the 4.2b2 does not work and downloads v4.2. The older version 4.1.2 was super stable but, alas, does not work in 10.5.. Any idea on a fix for this or a download link for v4.2b2?

Thanks

I hope someone reads this. I've been trying to contact someone at Unsanity for a while now, but e-mails sent to sales@unsanity.com and unsanity@unsanity.com seem to go to /dev/null. Is something wrong with your e-mail server or spam filter? We would really like to use the APE SDK in our shareware/commercial product but can't contact you about it!

Posted by: John L on December 14, 2008 7:36 PM

tolga, Vladimir,

My experience is the same as yours. I have sent Unsanity more than ten emails since May 2008 about an issue with my license key. (All I need is the email address on the license changed to my current address.) At this point I have tried all the email addresses I could find for them -- support@unsanity.com, sales@unsanity.com, unsanity@unsanity.com, feedback@unsanity.com, and press@unsanity.com. I have never received a reply.

I was planning on paying the voluntary upgrade fee once I got this sorted out. Once I saw that they weren't responding to emails I even thought about simply buying a new copy and forgetting about my current licence key, since there's only a few dollars difference in price, but I am very hesitant to continue to use (and pay for) software that appears to be completely unsupported.

I am frustrated and sad about this. I have enjoyed using FruitMenu products for many years, and don't want to have to stop using them. I keep posting here on the blog periodically hoping someone from Unsanity will respond.

Rosyna, if you are reading this, I would really like to hear from you.

Sign me up for the license key not working bug and no email response as well. I have lost all of my faith in Unsanity since the release of 10.5 and I have been without WSX and SS for so long that I barely even miss them anymore. C'est la vie.

Posted by: Twist on January 1, 2009 2:33 PM

Rumor has it that Unsanity has been bought by Apple, and Labels X and other haxies have been incorporated into Snow Leopard.

Unfortunately, I just started this rumor.

Posted by: Ben Dover on January 6, 2009 3:17 PM

tolga, Vlad, Noam, and others: We're all in the same boat, going thru all the same frustrating attempts at email, with no response from Unsanity.

(needed my old email address on Windowshadex license changed to new address).

I refuse to pay again for the same license.

Posted by: Don on January 19, 2009 1:57 PM

It's extremely disappointing that Unsanity cannot or will not communicate with users. At all.

In fact, it's just plain unprofessional. Show a little class, will ya?

Posted by: Joey on January 21, 2009 8:56 PM

OK, I finally made it work without there help, and hope this solution helps someone else out there. (Mac G4, G5)

Problem
Unsanity not responding about sending register codes to paid users with an old email address...

Solution:
If you have an old registered copy and you're trying to update a copy to your new machine:
• Search (Spotlight) your hard drive for all unsanity prefs.
(look in Hard Disk/Library/Prefs as well as Users/Library/Prefs)

• copy those to a new folder, be sure to note where each file belongs.

• go to new machine and DELETE any unsanity prefs if they are there. Replace with your copied prefs.

Simple fix. Hope it works for you, too.

Posted by: Don on January 23, 2009 12:46 PM

Users having to exchange tech support ideas because the developer won't respond? That's insanity, not unsanity. Sorry you had to do this Don, but good for you doing it.

I am through with these products for good, and I hope the company learns the hard way by going under for good. There may be perfectly good reasons for slow development & updates, but they don't excuse zero communication. These people just DO NOT GET IT: Any communication of any kind is better than none.

Posted by: Garrett on January 23, 2009 5:38 PM

oops. just over the weekend, it looked like the domain was for sale. now is back to normal. strange, anyway, all this is really bad news. I feel really sorry for the unsanity team. whatever happened had to happened but your supporters were with you and you should tell us. sad to see you going down due to your lack of ability to communicate.
