Dear APE, I want you inside me. Love, Leopard #2: APE 2.5b2

Uhm... Well, I didn't have this post very well thought out. Usually I dwell on blog posts for weeks while in the shower, but all I had for this post was the title and the photo.

We have not been posting new entries to this blogosplat, but have been working on updates to the various haxie betas. As soon as a new beta is released, all the old beta links in the previous post point to the brand new beta so we didn't have to update the post or anything. And since all the released products include an updater, there was no reason to notify people of new betas through a blog post (the updater would notificate them).

Of course, there are some exceptions. For example, Smart Crash Reports 1.5b3 was released a few weeks ago (it's also a part of FruitMenu 3.7b3 and higher). SCR does not include an updater (there's no need... yet) so I will state what's new on this post (ugh, that's not creative writing!)

  • Addressed an issue that could cause Apple-only crash reports to be sent to a third party if the user clicked the cancel button.
  • Made some UI improvements when cancelling a send.
  • Now properly shows which company it is sending a crash report to when sending to company and Apple.
  • The Installer plugin now checks to make sure SCR has the correct permissions on 10.5.

Download Smart Crash Reports 1.5b3

The really big news of course is Application Enhancer 2.5b2.

We really, really didn't want a repeat of what happened with older versions of APE (re: previous post). I mean, we really didn't want it. To that end, we've added an updater to APE itself. By default, it checks for updates weekly (or when the system version changes). If you install APE 2.5b2, I'd like you to change update checking (in the Application Enhancer preference pane) to daily.

Some third-party APE module developers asked if they could disable the update check when the user installed their software. We have decided against allowing it to be changed on install by anyone other than the computer user. I mean, "the problem" only occurred because some third parties were shipping very old versions of APE with their products (re: previous post again). It'd kind of defeat the purpose of the updater if it could so easily be controlled by third-party software.

  • Added an updater to APE, set to automatically check weekly, by default.
  • Reduced the number of unpatchables on PowerPC (includes APELite).
  • Addressed some cosmetic issues in the preference pane.
  • The APE preference pane will now state why it is disabled on Mac OS X 10.6.

Finally, there is a new beta of FruitMenu that includes APE 2.5b2 and SCR 1.5b3. However, you'd have to use the updater to get the new beta. We are desperately trying to get people to use the updaters.

Once again, I'd like to repeat the warning stated on previous posts in this category. I'm sorry if it seems harsh, but it has to be said.

Note: Please do not post comments and/or send emails asking about the present and/or future of things not mentioned in this post. Such comments will be moderated, deleted, or edited. When we have something to say about other products, it will be posted, and not a moment before then. Asking us about ETAs just ends up wasting both of our time. Apologies for taking such a harsh stance, but the only thing we would tell you is "it'll be done when it's done" and we're trying to prevent a repeat of the tens of thousands of comments/emails we've received asking for an ETA. Any kind of timeframe or ETA we could possibly give will be wrong and users get very disappointed when ETAs are missed. That's the nature of ETAs, they are always wrong. And due to the fact we won't release something before we feel it is ready, any ETA is even more likely to be missed.

On a happier note, I would like to state that SCR 1.5b3, FM 3.7b5, and APE 2.5b2 are nearly the final versions before actually being released in non-beta form. Except for the logging in FruitMenu, assume everything to be final and do not treat the software as beta quality in your mind.

Speaking of the logging in FruitMenu, we are looking for any large values attached to "CreateMenuItem:" as listed in the console. We especially want to know if any operation takes longer than 200ms. This information will be used to increase FruitMenu's loading speed in the future.

Price Increases Abound

On a final note, the prices of the haxies are going up as the Leopard-compatible versions are released. FruitMenu, for example, is increasing from $10 to $12. The reason for this price increase is the sad state the US economy is in (seriously, Canadian funny money is worth more than the US dollar, OMGWTFBBQ?!). The price increases of other products have not been decided on yet.

Are all your custumers Canadian like me? Don't worry, US dollars value is still higher than CA dollars by about 4%.

I love Fruit Menu and I miss ShapeShifter.

Glad to see new versions are out- but I have a show stopper for FruitMenu. The new beta no longer follows aliases in the "FruitMenu Items" folder. The last beta did. For example, I have an alias to Applications, and before FruitMenu would display the contents as a menu, but now it just shows up as a folder alias but not contents in the new beta. I hope this is fixed before final release!

The submenu problem was fixed in b4 of FM, which was released on the same day as b3. b5 should not be showing this. Make sure you have b5 installed.

Hi,
The new beta of APE seems to have broken Window Shade on my MBP.

Posted by: Mike on August 7, 2008 9:39 AM

FM b5 resolves my aliases, but icons only display in first menu. WS works fine with APE b2.

Posted by: Geoff on August 7, 2008 11:38 AM

Rosyna- Interesting, as according to the updating in FruitMenu b3, I am up to date. So how do I get the new update if I can't download it off the web?

Posted by: Matt on August 7, 2008 1:47 PM

When starting up a garbage-collection aware app like the Property List Editor I get a lot of those console messages:

Property List Editor[771] Error loading /Library/Application Enhancers/WindowShade X.ape/Contents/PlugIns/WindowShade X Cocoa.ape/Contents/MacOS/WindowShade X Cocoa: dlopen(/Library/Application Enhancers/WindowShade X.ape/Contents/PlugIns/WindowShade X Cocoa.ape/Contents/MacOS/WindowShade X Cocoa, 262): no suitable image found. Did find:
/Library/Application Enhancers/WindowShade X.ape/Contents/PlugIns/WindowShade X Cocoa.ape/Contents/MacOS/WindowShade X Cocoa: GC capability mismatch

So WSX doesn't work at all with Property List Editor. This is not exclusive to WSX, all my InputManagers (Chax, Smart Crash Reports, SIMBL) show this error in the log.

Regarding not asking for update time scale I think that makes perfect sense for most of us. However, I think a more frequent blog update would help. Even if it's just to say "Hello, we on it". (as a programmer I know how long this stuff takes).

With no update for about 6 months(Feb - Aug) I was beginning to think that unsanity was no more. Which is not a feeling that you want to encourage.

Posted by: Gazzer on August 8, 2008 8:18 AM

OK, this is weird. When Safari is at the front, the submenus in FM b5 appear without icons, but if any other programme is at the front (even if Safari is launched), the icons appear in submenus as well as the main Apple Menu. Not a major problem, but weird.

Posted by: Geoff on August 8, 2008 12:11 PM

Geoff, can you email us a screenshot of this behaviour? Also, make sure you have no custom settings for Safari set in the FruitMenu preference pane

Posted by: Rosyna on August 8, 2008 2:55 PM

On my Mac Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.4 in FruitMenu 3.7b5 no folders are listed in the 'Recent Folders' submenu for the last two days now. All other 'Recent Applications' and 'Recent Documents' have listings.

Fair enough about not asking for ETAs, I understand that completely. However, your betas page has said for many months now that a Leopard-compatible beta of CHAT TRANSCRIPT MANAGER already EXISTS - but nowhere to download it? Since this program doesn't use APE, it must present less of a challenge to "fix" for Leopard in any case. I REALLY MISS THIS APPLICATION. Any chance of at least a quick status report (or even better, download link for the beta...?)

Listen, if you don't want people posting comments on ShapeShifter, you need to give your hundreds of customers some sort of knowledge whatsoever on when/how to expect it, if ever. That's called good business, and telling people to shut up because they're not getting any information for a year is even worse business. It's called customer appreciation. Learn it.

FOR GOD'S SAKE! IF YOU HAVE A WORKING BETA OF CHAT TRANSCRIPT MANAGER, WHY CAN WE NOT HAVE IT???!!?!?

Keep getting error: "Rebuild failed: Writing to '/usr/www/users/slava/org/archives/000517.php.new' failed: Opening local file '/usr/www/users/slava/org/archives/000517.php.new' failed: Permission denied"

One thing. Before with option-doubleclick it window-shaded all windows, but now that no longer happens and there seems to be no setting to make it happen.

And to those people giving unsanity a hard time: programming is a time consuming process that you can't imagine. Not only that but unsanity has to program within a constantly changing framework which may even be designed to make the kind of products that they produce not work. We're not talking Photoshop here for several hundred dollars - these are extremely cheap applications that can only be guaranteed to work with the system that you bought it with. I agree that unsanity could perhaps keep us up to date a little better, but given that they give these updates for free, we need to give these Apple developers some slack (and remember what insanity or doing is a very low level system change which unlike other apps can be close to impossible to implement).

Hello you all, I have two feature requests for two different programs. Both of which may be impossible.

-It would be great if for fruit menu, we could have our applications menu back in the top level of the control click dialog (as opposed to in the more section) I guess if the choice is between having faster menus and placing it at the upper level, I vote for the faster menus, but I miss just seeing it there.

-It would be even better if there were a way to select a default in windowshade to have the window shaded for certain programs. I would use this to enable a transparency that is easier to control than the one in crystal clear.

Thanks for all your hard work. I am on 10.5.2 by the way, and these programs absolutely rock (again).

The bottom line is communication. Even if it's one sentence one a month saying, "Still working on it - hang in there, loyal paying customers." Six months in software is YEARS in anything else, so yes, many including me thought Unsanity was most likely gone. Leave a very bad taste. However difficult the job may be, communicating that you're still around isn't hard at all.

My Question is this. I purchased several haxies (including Shapeshifter), and have been UNABLE to use them due to incompatibility since I upgraded to Leopard a YEAR AGO. What kind of compensation are you going to give people such as I who purchased something that they were unable to use for quite some time... I couldn't imagine paying for Shapeshifter again after being unable to use it for over a year. Finally, I have all types of software for my mac (utilities, Microsoft Office, and many, many others). I can't think of a single software developer whom I purchase products from who hasn't created an update for their product since Leopard came out. I loved Shapeshifter, and It's blows me away that it's been a year since the Leopard and there's still not even a beta... I'm hugely disappointed. Furthermore, Apple is working on Snow Leopard Now. If a Leopard-Compatible version of Shapeshifter comes out, will it cease to work when user upgrade to Snow Leopard and have to wait another year and a half again for a working update.

I am delighted that new versions compatible with 10.5 are out or on their way. I was afraid you guys had decided not to continue. Thanks for keeping on.

With respect to news or ETA: I understand completely your decision. On the other hand, a post every two weeks or so along the lines of "We're still breathing" would be welcomed by your fans, I think.

Best wishes from Chicago.

I not speek englis.

gracias

What Charles said (above; 8/18/08). You guys designed good software in the past, but you're burning your bridges w/ your user base by not communicating.

A simple question with a not so simple answer:
If I sent you, say, $US1000 would that be enough to motivate or enable you to provide a snow leopard compatible release of Window Shade X? I am not 100% sure I can afford it yet. But will know in the next few months. Is it worth doing?

Keep up the great work. Oh, and love the super cute girls in the pics. Not in a sick way, mind you. I'm a father of 3 girls and grandfather to four, for heaven's sake. I just think they look creative, fun, sweet and adorable.

I assume Unsanity no longer exists. No web log entry by Unsanity staff since September 2008. Last comment here was on January 12 2009, so it appears users of Unsanity products have given up the ghost. I use FruitMenu and did use Xounds. I will not move on to further Mac OSX versions (White Panther) without the availability of FruitMenu. Very sad.

Lack of response to your customers convinced me not to purchase your product--that and it appears Snow Leopard destroys Window Shades X.

"there is a new beta of FruitMenu that includes APE 2.5b2 and SCR 1.5b3. However, you'd have to use the updater to get the new beta."
How do I get this beta? The Updater says I'm up-to-date.
