It's a matter of instinct

Recently Rouge Amoeba, purveyor of fine cosmetics, published some numbers and experiences about their new product release, Winfoil. (apparently, some type of combination cosmetic/UV/extraterrestrial protection cream. I've yet to try it)

It's a matter of conditioning

We got talking about how it would be interesting to look at conversion rates on our products. That was yesterday. Not one to slack, Paul posted the dirt today.

I like Paul, but I don't like him staring at me for extended periods, so without further ado and bad jokes, here is Unsanity's conversion rates for May 2006:

It's a matter of fact.

CTM FC FM LX MeMa MM SS Silk WSX XND
Conversion
Rate:
3.1% 10.4% 5.4% 4.0% 4.7% 2.9% 2.3% 3.7% 6.2% 3.3%

I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to match up those acronyms to our various products. :)

What does all this mean? Well, not a whole lot from what I can tell. There are so many factors that influence these numbers that it's hard to get a really clear picture. May was definitely not our best month on record. We just barely started getting our products Universal-ized and that surely has had an impact on our conversion rates.

Interestingly, FontCard seems to sell itself quite well. I think a large part of the reason for its successful conversion rate is the niche it targets. Generally, professionals are the people who download and use it. They tend to pay for the software that makes their lives easier a bit more readily. ShapeShifter on the other hand has a fairly low rate. Why? Basically it's the opposite of FontCard. It's basically just a fun product. It's also our most pirated product. That may also influence the conversion rate numbers.

Finally, just so you don't base too much on these numbers, I've checked various time periods and it's quite amazing to see how much they vary. So this is just us, one small mac developer, for one 30 day period. Take what you will from it.

That said, it is fun to look at, let's see more developers get on board and post their findings!

Heehee

You can call me Pavlov's Dog.

And you can stop touting around that you have a very cool song named after you.

Is the conversion rate based on sales/downloads or is it sales/unique website visitors? If it's the latter, how do you identify those who looked three or four times during different sessions before deciding to buy?

It's just a simple sales/downloads based number. Hence the reason it doesn't mean much.

Hi,

Nice for would-be developer to have a look at those numbers.

How do you know that ShapeShifter is your most pirated product? How do you estimate that?

So, if Fontcard is in the higher end of things, then you should put all your efforts in getting it Universal. I'm so serious about that as a professional that I would pay for it again. I really, really miss it. I see that half the apps have red dots. I check several times a day to see if Fontcard has gone yellow or green,

I think you should check pirate sites like all developers and disable the pirated numbers each build. Why you shouldn't? If it is the issue that "pirate will post 1 star review" or "pirate will claim it is spyware", eh it is happening already :)

I saw a $5 , yes 5 dollar product gets pirated. I told it to its developer, he said "while it took a while to believe that, I disabled serial this build"

I would have hard time believing too...

I've been wating for a universal version of ShapeShifter since I got my new Intel Mac (I need it for a theme fromm http://www.dlanham.com). I thought the conversion process was due to technical difficulties switching architectures..

I am reluctant to buying a license before the app is available, just to increase your 'conversion rate'..
