Our order processor, eSellerate (part of MindVision) decided to add a new "feature" to our store called the eSellerate Download Service. The services costs $4.99 and was turned on automatically April 5th, 2004. It automatically adds itself to every new order (not product, just order) and it is "non-obvious" for the customer how to turn it off and that it is not necessary. It almost looks like it is mandatory and is a download "tax".
It is now off by default on our store, but we've have an enormous amount of people go head and purchase it when it was on. It hurts our sales in the long run (adds another 50% to the cost, a $10 product becomes $14.99) and has no clear benefits. The stuff off our store is always the same file available from our website. eDS might also distribute old versions of our software with bugs we quickly fixed in it. I am thinking like 10.4 comes out, the current WSX isn't compatible and needs an update so we update it. Someone purchases WSX today and did a clean install of 10.4 when it was released then used eDS to redownload the old, 10.4 incompatible version. Not good. And sadly there seems to be no way to turn it off ad infinitum.
Erik of NSLog(); also has some thoughts on it. He asked me to check something on his store and that's when I noticed eDS.

Well, MindVision has always been a fairly evil company in my mind - look at how wretched and modal their installers continue to be (of course, Unsanity also continues to use their own proprietary installer... sigh...). It doesn't surprise me that they'd spring something like that on you, although you have my complete sympathy in now having to deal with supporting those users.
Posted by: Joshua on April 14, 2004 12:18 PMReminds me of the "opt-out" requirements with credit and lending institutions. Why is it that I always have to call or write to tell them that I do not want to participate. Why not just have an "opt-in" program instead?
Posted by: CREB on April 14, 2004 1:04 PMI hate eSellerate. It makes it difficult to purchase if you do not have a credit card. That alone should hurt your sales. Maybe it does. It's prevented me from registering a couple of apps because it's such a hassle for me.
Posted by: kwyjibo on April 14, 2004 4:11 PMI like your installer because I don't have to go in w/ pacifist and remove crap cuz I can't install stuff cuz I'm not an admin.

Posted by: Joe on April 14, 2004 5:50 PMOoh I love this. Go to the eDS description page (http://www.esellerate.net/eds/), and check out the image halfway down.
Apparently, The Best Product Ever only costs $15...until you try to buy it >:)
Posted by: Josh Zerin on April 15, 2004 7:07 AMRosyna, as buggy as Apple's installer may be I'd personally love to see you guys adopt it for your products. The only reason I advocate this is performing mass installs via Apple Remote Desktop. Installing a package via ARD is easiest way for me to keep all the Macs under my care up to date. Please consider it, won't you?
Posted by: Bryan Schappel on April 15, 2004 9:38 AMApple's Installer is actually pretty good now. But it does take quite a bit of work to make sure your package does everything just right. (And certain features just don't work with old versions, but most features work in 10.2 and later.)
Posted by: Tim Buchheim on April 15, 2004 8:00 PM(I vote for evil, very evil indeed, a reasonable handling fee would be okay but a 50% markup is outrageous). I like your present installer, I wouldn't go for the Apple one, which often requires a reboot for no obviously good reason (your installer at most suggest a fresh login, and in fact many of your installations work work quite fine without one).
Posted by: Dana Sutton on April 16, 2004 1:30 AMBelieve it or not, there is one bank that practices "opt-in" rather than "opt-out". ING Direct (which is semi-famous for offering the Orange account, advertised online with large orange banners). When I read their newsletter one time to discover this policy, I about fell over - I haven't heard of any financial institution before or since then that has "opt-in". That is, you must specifically request to be put on the list.
Also, I tend to like Unsanity's custom installer. I appreciate the point that Apple is trying to provide installation as a service so that individual developers don't have to, but until Apple makes their provided installer better, I don't have the slightest problem if individual developers want to smooth installation for their customers.
I also agree that this download service is a scam - a popular compression software vendor that's been around for a long time seems to try to add such a service to all the downloadable items they sell too - although I think in their case it may be the only way to redownload certain items, it is a poor value. Redownloads of previously purchased items ought to be free to paying customers.
