Let Me Show You The World In My Eyes
As you may know, Apple is finally doing a staged release of the GM version of Panther to the ADC members with seed access. We were hard at work on the Panther compatibility ourselves, and we think it's time to share what we've got at this point with you guys. Please be advised that the links below point to beta quality software. This means, it may make your OS crash. If it does, please let me know at the slava[at]unsanity.com. Two betas below were specifically updated to fix some of the Panther glitches. Other haxies have not yet been updated, so please proceed with caution if you use them. If you run a news site, please do not post links to the files -- we are not yet ready to release these to the masses, so please keep these files on this site only. However, you are free to link directly to this blog post from your blogs (no links from public news sites, please!).
All of these should work on Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3. I will be posting the current, a bit unfinished, build of Metallifizer later, when I package it; adventurous minds can compile it from the SDK, as the latest source is included. ClearDock works as-is on Panther; Menu Master and Dock Detox are not yet recommended for usage under Panther, as they may cause weird behavior under some circumstances. All in all, let me know either by email or in comments to this post how everything's working. Update 10/17: Here is the updated WindowShade X build and Metallifizer alpha. Any word on what's going to happen to Labels X? I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that Apple's implementation is damn U-G-L-Y my .02 Posted by: kcjones76 on October 16, 2003 12:00 PMkcjones: I've been looking into it, but not too extensively this far. I think we'll be ramping up an update for Labels X as well, as soon as I find how Panther's Finder draws these. Posted by: slava on October 16, 2003 12:15 PMA request to keep looking at MenuMaster... I know Panther has something similar built-in, but nothing can match the ease of MM. Truly brilliant. As for Labels, I think you both share the same data, but if you can do anything to improve the appearance of the Apple labels that'd be a big bonus... Just my two cents. Posted by: Rob W on October 16, 2003 1:03 PMI actually like apple's implementation better I've only used labels in os 9- to track what installers stick in my extensions folder, I do not like how labels tints the icons, however if you were to make it look better I would buy it. Posted by: Dan Saul on October 16, 2003 2:38 PMThere's some weirdness going on in the menubar relating to the shadow settings in WindowshadeX. All the menulet icons are getting shadowed and disabling the custom shadow function doesn't get rid of it. The workaround is to enable custom shadows, drag all the sliders to the far left then disable it again. This is on 7B85 running on a DP867 with a GeForce 4ti and 1gb RAM (if it matters *g*). But... BOY is it good to have fruitmenu and Windowshade back again - I really struggle without them these days - it's well worth the odd glitch to have 'em back. Thanks for posting the beta! Looking forward to Metallifizer =] Posted by: Tersono on October 17, 2003 3:09 AMexperienced the same problem as tersono above plus another one: after turning custom shadow settings back off (as described above), every time i drag and drop selected text out of safari (1.1, v100), that text, while dragging, is visible as a "blurry shadow". logging in as a different user (no haxies enabled) shows that text while being dragged appears "clear" as it should. in case it matters: g4 dual 1 ghz, radeon 8500 (retail), 1.5 gb ram, ape + fruitmenu + wsx, system version same as tersono Posted by: eff on October 17, 2003 5:07 AMThank you guys -- keep the reports coming. I've fixed the shadows issue and will post a new beta sometime later when I squash a few other reported bugs. =) Posted by: slava on October 17, 2003 5:18 AMin your blurb you mention that ClearDock works on Panther as is, I haven't found this to be the case; on installation changing the settings does nothing, and when I reboot APE tells me ClearDock has been disabled as it isn't compatible with 10.3. Any ideas? Posted by: loophole on October 17, 2003 11:53 AMloophole: simple re-enable it in the APE Manager. Even though we haven't put 'panther certified' flag in the current version, it works just fine on my Mac. If it still don't, contact me. =) Posted by: slava on October 17, 2003 1:02 PMSometimes the arrows appertaining to maps and drives in FruitMenu disappear. They reappear when the FruitMenu pref.pane is brought to the front. Life without FruitMenu being miserable, I am already happy with this partial Pantherization. Posted by: Rudi Hirschfeld on October 17, 2003 1:04 PMHere's a weird one. I usually have FruitMenu's Contextual Menu Disabled. It seems to be interfering with the Finder's contextual menus somehow, anyway. My "A Better Finder Rename..." contextual menu is listed twice, and my Enable/Configure Folder Actions items are both gone. When I Enable the FM Contextual Menu, though, those things return. Posted by: frank on October 17, 2003 2:25 PMTotally off topic... but... Slava... are you a Depeche Mode fan by any chance? :p M Posted by: MiGjel on October 17, 2003 4:50 PMMiGjel: it's just that I am in the DM phase of my life, once again. =) There's an interesting tribute album out: http://club.mp3search.ru/album.html?id=10301 (too lazy to search the official link). ;) Posted by: slava on October 17, 2003 11:48 PMand another one : ) ... this time fruitmenu: currently, i have ape + fruitmenu (32b1) + wsx (31b3) installed. with this combination snapz pro will crash immediately after i double-click it. if i open system prefs and deactivate fruitmenu in the ape manager and close system prefs, snapz pro will work flawlessly. i tried to leave fruitmenu active (in ape manager) and selectively deactivate "fruitmenu apple menu" and "fruitmenu contextual menus" to see if deselecting one of these options will enable snapz pro to run, but to no avail - only way for me to get snapz pro running is to disable fruitmenu in the ape manager. Posted by: eff on October 18, 2003 4:06 AMeff: I cannot get it to crash on my Macs. Is there any way you can email me the crash report? (~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Snapz Pro.log) -- if you have one. Posted by: slava on October 18, 2003 4:23 AMslava, nevermind snapz pro - that was my mistake. after upgrading to panther, i accidentally restored my 3rd-party utilities from an old backup that contained snapz pro 1.0.5. i just reinstalled the current version (1.0.8) and it works perfectly fine. btw, snapz pro 1.0.5 didn't create a crash log - it just vanished. Posted by: eff on October 18, 2003 5:10 AMeff: Phew. =) I am investigating all other reported problems, though. Posted by: slava on October 18, 2003 9:51 AMFruitMenu 3.2b1 appears to have a non-funtional "Location" submenu in the Apple menu. I can select items in the menu, but the configuration is not switched. Disabling FruitMenu's Apple Menu enhancements eliminates the problem. Thanks for posting this sneak peek. Couldn't live without FruitMenu. Bas Posted by: Bas on October 18, 2003 8:57 PMClearDock doesn't work. I've enabled, disabled, applied, restored, etc etc. Still white. I can't stand white. I need clear. I installed APE 1.4.1 and have ClearDock 1.2.4. Posted by: on October 18, 2003 10:50 PMUnder 10.3 (7B85) Silk seems to cause significant slowdown, particularly in application launch times. Posted by: Gordon on October 20, 2003 10:46 PMA big request for Dock Detox....without it Entourage gets very annoying whenever it has any kind of problems (incessant bouncing dock icon). Posted by: andrew on October 26, 2003 11:20 AMI've looked around, but no one else seems to be having my problem. I install APE 1.4.1, but then I can't seem to install any other Haxies. Everything seems to start fine, but it pulls up the pref pane and that tells me that I have no installed modules. Any ideas? I'm on Panther 10.3.1, btw.
