Is it just me or VeriSign is crossing all limits?
Type any non-existent domain name into your browser... (www.this-domain-does-not-exist-19784kdfgfjkfg.com will work).
Look where it takes you. How does this makes you feel?
For me, this means another huge source of income for VeriSign. Right now the page has no ads, but I am pretty sure it won't take long for them to appear there; also, what if somebody wants to buy a domain but first types it in a browser to see if it's taken... gets to the VeriSign page and sees an offer to register the abovementioned domain for a sweet $60/year crapdeal. Does this sounds like a fair play to other dot-registrants? Does a personal, single-company operated page for ANY non-existant domain sounds fair at all?

Update: Petiton to Verisign to sign; the SiteFinder page at which it replies to non-existant DNS records seems to be seriously lagged; the direct result at SiteFinder that you'll get, bypassing the lagged bounce server.

VeriSign is raping the internet. Long term this will cost ISP's world wide a lot of money. There is no way you can compete with that kind of advertising. Why VeriSign and not me? Who did VS have to blow to pull this off?
I say if the ICANN won't fix it, we all route *.verisign.com to 127.0.0.1.
FUCK YOU VERISIGN. Can't wait to get to the office. Kiss any 100k + contracts goodbye as of today.
Posted by: Court Kizer on September 16, 2003 3:48 AMDoesn't work from here. Did I just try to do it too late and they pulled the plug?
Posted by: on September 16, 2003 7:49 AMAn email service provider that I use has lost its .com and .net domains. They are all resolving to sitefinder.verisign.com. Very strange because they were working perfectly yesterday.
This is either a bit coincidence or maybe verisign has stuffed some things up during the change.
Posted by: daveo on September 16, 2003 6:55 PMHonestly, I'm amazed more people don't bitch about the practical aspects of this stupid decision — such as the little known secret that IP allows for communication on ports other than 80, and the related issue of me having spent time today trying to figure out why sshd had died on our main webserver, when in fact I'd just mistyped its name.
Posted by: Josh on September 18, 2003 1:11 PMWell I just discovered a neat trick with all that damn junk email I'm getting. Most of it goes to an aliased domain, so it comes in through a redirect on my hosts DNS.
The really neat trick now is I've changed the junk-attacked email address to point to a non existent domain. Since this now goes to verisgn, all my junk mail can be redirected to them at no cost ! Yay !
If enough people do this blah blah, then they're gonna have to invest so much in infrastructure they'll become insolvent ;-P
Wow - 2 birds with one stone LOLOL
Posted by: Neil Smith on September 20, 2003 5:04 AMOh they have advertising :). Try doing a search or clicking any of the links. See the "sponsored results". PPC baby.
Posted by: Jon Gales on September 21, 2003 10:28 AMGuess how I got to this page?
I typed something into the url bar (typo, invalid URL), and wound up @ VeriSign. So, I typed "Fuck You VeriSign" into their form, and it brought me here !
same thing, i tried a domain and typed fuck you verisign and got here hahah
Posted by: on September 25, 2003 12:52 PMI entered fuck you verisign in their search bar: and I'll say it again: fuck you verisign.
Posted by: on September 28, 2003 4:42 PMyup, I just did the same thing as the last few posters. I hate their redirect shit. I typed "fuck you verisign" into their search bar and here I am.
Posted by: i hate verisign on September 30, 2003 9:38 AMI got here typing FUCK YOU VERISIGN also (and I really fucking mean it!)
If nothing else, at least their search engine is consistent.
woaw, just arrived here with the "fuck you verisign" syndrome
as an action, besides redirecting junk mail to them, someone also had the idea of getting a junk .com addressevery minute or so, automated;
on unix, something like
wget blahhhhhhhveriveroverasign.com
in the crontab
ha ha, looks like i'm not the only one that typed "Fuck You Verisign". *grin*
Posted by: duker on October 3, 2003 3:25 PMI wonder who the poor schmuck is that gets to sift through their datamart nowdays. I'll bet it's pretty easy to keep track of. The charts would be easy to make. "Legitimate searches: 2" on the left side and "Searches for 'Fuck You Verisign': 4,208,168,911,420" on the right (They could even use that little counter that just keeps spinning and spinning). I still have yet to see any releases from Verisign (I liked that verioverasign jab somebody threw in earlier) stating A) Why they did it, B) How long they thought they would actually be able to get away with it, and C) Well, I don't have a point C, but you get the idea. I guess I missed the memo that M$ bought them out.
Posted by: SilentBob on October 4, 2003 7:21 AMI typed "FUCK YOU YAHOO" for redirecting type to the search fiel rather than the address bar.
