Buried in the Stream of Time is Where Your Power Grows

This post is about FontCard. FontCard is a new haxie. If you would like to beta test it. Please email me. rosyna at this company dot com.

FontCard is a haxie that modifies the Font menu in Carbon (and soon Cocoa) applications. It can add an icon that displays the format of a font next to the font menu item, display the font name in the font face, group fonts into submenus, and and add font collections to the font menu.

FontCard in Word

I am not adding any new features for the final 1.0 release but I am accepting feature requests for the 1.1 release which will be free to those that register 1.0. I am trying to get this out by August 14th.

FontCard also has a higher cost ($17) than the other Unsanity products released over the years. This is due to the market it is aimed for mostly. Also, when comparing it to previous font menu modification thingies on Mac OS 9, FontCard is much, much less costly. (Over twice as less costly in most cases).

There is no icon yet for FontCard and I need suggestions for what to put for text on the first tab on the preference pane. (Look at silk for examples) It does currently have issues with BBEdit and Corel Draw 11. Not sure if those can be addressed by 1.0.

Only tested to work with QuarkXPress 6.0, InDesign 2.0.2, Microsoft Word 10.1.x, Snak 4.9.x, BBEdit 7.0.x, ATSUICurveAccess Demo, and AppleWorks 6.2.7.

Kewl, this is something that I really have wanted. I'll be buying it as soon as it is ready.

$17 is cheap. I paid like $80 for Adobe type reunion deluxe which I used back in the Mac classic days.

What did it do that FC doesn't do right now?

Posted by: Rosyna on August 9, 2003 4:52 AM

Unlike Menu Fonts which was bundled with Suitcase it didn't crash your machine.

"Product Description:
Adobe Type Reunion is part of the Adobe Type Manager (ATM) package. Type Reunion Deluxe automatically sorts your fonts according to family name, listing style, and weight variations in a submenu under each name - so you can find fonts faster."

Basically it gave you WYSIWYG font menus in most programs expect Adode apss, WTF. By holding down key modifiers you could turn it off when you clicked on a font menu which was handy for finding a dingbat font. You could also exclude fonts from the font menu, choose which fonts displayed WYSIWYG and which didn't. You could also choose what size the fonts displayed in the menu.

I put the user guide up on one of my servers for you, http://terrizamore.com/ATR_User_Guide.pdf

Ah, of course you can disable FC by holding shift when you click the font menu and reveal the font in the finder when you hold down the command key.

Not sure if I can do font sizes because I seem to only be able to specify the size for the entire menu. Which would also increase the size of the font sets name.

=D yay. Now I wont have to sign another ATM for OSX petition. Thanks babe.

Personally I like buying software from Unsanity more then buying from Adobe anyway. :P

Ever thought about making those "format icons" somewhat more... casual??

Posted by: Andreas Tellefsen on August 9, 2003 2:42 PM

Andreas, I concur - the format icons are much too intrusive visually. Hey, Rosyna, don't forget that a lot of print / graphics people have their monitors set to as neutral as possible (grey theme, grey desktop background) so as to not introduce any colour influences when doing colour work. If you need to use icons in the menus, could they be shades of grey?

Very nice, though, and definitely needed.

I would like to purchase my FontCard serial number now, if possible. I purchase all Unsanity's products so I might as well get ahead of the pack.

>a lot of print / graphics people have their monitors set to as neutral as possible so as to not introduce any colour influences when doing colour work [...]

Which would matter if the icons were visible at all times, which they are not, so the point is moot.

still, the icons are ugly! :-)

Looks great (a bit like the similar utility from Alsoft)! I've been waiting for this since OS X killed Now/ACTION WYSIWYG Menus.

I'm assuming 'LW' font designation means LaserWriter? Not good.
It should be 'PS' for Postscript Type 1 Fonts!

Please add an 'MM' for MultipleMaster Fonts. SOME of us bought a lot of them and STILL use 'em! Yes, they work in Jaguar.

There needs to be more space between the font designation blocks and the typeface name itself. Also, if those blocks were lighter colors it would be much better!

Keep up the good work. I look forward to getting my mitts on this!

Am way WOW'd beyond impressed with FontCard and the comments, but I for one, am glad that I don't have to pay a user fee each time I marvel at the post title "BURIED IN THE STREAM OF TIME IS WHERE YOUR POWER GROWS".

Alas, now there is indeed one thing that is more consistently awesome that Unsanity products -- what a turn of words!

Thanks, Rosyna!

So will you be the first to get both Carbon and Cocoa apps using a font menu organizer. There are a few out there now, but I think they're limited to Cocoa OR Carbon, not both.

I agree with the above posts about the identifier. I realize it can be disabled, but while it's active, maybe it could be a subdued gray. The acronyms speak for themselves. I'm not sure rainbow colours are that helpful.

I also noticed the flyout menu showing the different fonts of the family also have the font indentifier. Is that really necessary?

How does it handle different font foundaries? Separate Garamonds? Does Adobe Garamond appear with the A's of the G's?

So, as it stands now, FC works with Jaguar and Panther?

I'm gonna definitely bug you for a lil sneak peek. August 14th still the release date? Man, you apps are great. I own most of them!
