Self-Expanding Disk Images
Apple has posted an article on how to create these disk images that auto-copy their contents when you download them and move themselves to Trash. Some people love it, some people hate it, yet now we all know how to make these (and we knew it long before via ~stevenf, heh). Trackback Pings: TrackBack URL for this entry: Related:

Am I the only person who hates the fact that the DMG is deleted - I like to archive DMGs - then you can distribute them to family members / restore from them when the app goes tits-up Posted by: Diggory on March 8, 2003 7:43 AMArchives are a braindead way of distributing software, anyway. They're supposed to be virtual volumes, not a way to distribute software. I had to explain to several new Mac users why they suddenly have more volumes if they download things, why they can't delete the .dmg-files while the volumes are still mounted, why the volumes disappear after a restart and why they can't move them to the trash if they want to delete them (the Trash can changes its symbol to an "Eject"-icon). It's totally confusing and dumb. It's good that Apple has made it possible to do away with all the mounting business, but I have no idea why people have ever started using images to distribute software. It's totally counter-intuitive. There are better ways to preserve meta data and Resource Forks. Posted by: LKM on March 8, 2003 7:59 AMArgh, I meant to say "Images are a braindead way", not "Archives". Posted by: LKM on March 8, 2003 8:00 AMI think that all DMGs should automounted and be moved to the trash. So what's the problem Diggory, can't you move the DMG out of the trash and then archive them? I certainly hope that Unsanity decides to use automounting for all of their dmg files. Also, try Mount.app http://mount.houchin.us/ This little app seems to mount DMG files almost instantly. Posted by: Alexis on March 8, 2003 9:51 AMI often go to customers and find all kinds of downloads on their desktops. They usually have no idea that you have to actually install them to use them, especially updates. They seem to think that just downloading them is all that is needed and have no idea that they need to be installed. Sometimes I think that many computer users have about the same IQ as my kitchen sponge. Unless a big dialog comes up telling them that they need to click to install or something it is just going to sit on they desktop :-/ For real fun see them try to deal with firmware upgrades, lol. I only like it if the only contents of the DMG are an Installation app. I usually drag the Installer out and delete the DMG anyway to save time. If Unsanity did that, it'd be cool since they usually only put an Installer in a folder with a pretty background. But I'd like to keep something I can use to install it with. If it's going to open the DMG, move an app out and delete the DMG, I don't want that. I can't archive an app. I need a DMG or an Installer to work with. Or a Stuffit file. That reminds me, I gotta go through my archives and weed out useless archives again. *sigh* So many DMG's, SIT's and Installers to go through.
